When Jackson was writing “Doctor My Eyes” he lived below Glenn Frey before the Eagles. Every morning Glenn would be awakened early with a tea kettle, followed by hours of the same song on the piano, over and over. It occurred to Glenn “so that’s how you write songs, you put in the work”.

Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Doctor, My Eyes" and "The Pretender"!!! Also "The Load Out", which normally is followed by "Stay".

1977 I was 9 years old and I remember being in the station wagon with my mom at the wheel listening to this on the radio...music is so powerful— that it can you bring you back to sitting in the backseat with your arm out the window and the wind in your hair, not knowing about lyrics..just knowing you liked the song and you were just a kid..Now of course I love the song and the lyrics.

He was my Brothers favorite. Rest in Peace baby brother. Hearing Jackson Browne always makes me sad and happy all at one time.

Jackson Browne is great friends with the "Eagles" and the wondeful song "Take It Easy" was co-written with his great and late friend Glenn Frey. RIP Glenn. So sadly missed! JB is a fantastic song writer and his stories in his songs run deep!

Running on Empty came out in 1977, so he is an old soul now. But his history does go back to the 1960s, and when he was young he was tied to Andy Warhol. But he made his name around Los Angeles, was friends with the guys who became Eagles, and wrote Take It Easy with Glenn Frey. Well respected, and despite some rough times in his life, he is still out there performing.

"In 65 I was 17, In 69 I was 21". Those lyrics meant so much to me mainly because I was 17 and 21 in those years. Jackson Browne in my opinion writes poetry and puts it to music. I have always loved him music, his lyrics and his voice.

One of the best, most profound songs ever written. When Jackson wrote, "looking out at the road rushing under my wheels" his beater car had a hole in the floor.

One of the most massive hits of the 70's. The year it was released, this song was EVERYWHERE. So great, such a lovely sound. This song was from his mega-hit live album "Running On Empty". When he says "if I can get you to smile before I leave" originally it meant a girl, but here he's saying it to the audience. His relationship with the crowd on this album was magical. (By the way, "running up 101" refers to the 101 freeway that comes up out of Los Angeles and runs all the way to Northern California. It was the route I always took when I would visit L.A. from NoCal.)

The problem you had with "Stay" was you didn't play the whole song...you have to listen to "The Load Out/Stay" to get the whole thing. It is an all time classic.

The whole Running on Empty album is great and quite the unique live album. Some songs are done live on stage in front of an audience like this one, but one was done in a hotel bathroom and one on the tour bus. The album was a critical and commercial, award-winning success.

The great Rosemary Butler's background vocals are a classic on this song.

Those years 1965 & 1969)were during the Vietnam War, as well as the Civil Rights protests.
So much turmoil, and this song captures those memories when he makes reference to the timeline and how young he was.
I love this song because it was in my veins during high school, (I listened to it so much, and loved Jackson Browne--still do!)
So glad that you listened to it, and that you really loved it.

I saw Jackson live just last month -- he's still got it! Two early songs of his you might like -- "These Days, " written when he was seventeen, and his first major hit, "Doctor My Eyes, " a hit song fifty years ago. And you're right, he's an old soul.

Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In '65, I was seventeen and running up 101
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on

[Chorus]
Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I'm running behind

[Verse 2]
Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In '69, I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on

[Chorus]
Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I'm running behind

[Bridge]
Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, that'll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave

[Verse 3]
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes I see them running too

[Chorus]
Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I'm running behind
Honey, you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind
(Running on)
You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find
(Running blind)
Running into the sun but I'm running behind
