2D Game Engines...Can YOU Tell The Difference? (Construct, Godot, Gamemaker, Unity, GDevelop)

I hired 5 game developers to make a 2D platformer in 5 different game engines to see if YOU could tell which game was made with which game engine.

Which game did you like the best? Which game goes with which engine? (Unity, Godot Engine, Construct 3, GameMaker, GDevelop)

Can I be the devil's advocate??? 😈The debate about engines is really about which engine offers the most value to the developers and not about what the players will say. Things like ease of use, price of the engine, supported export platforms, tools on the asset store - are some of the criteria to consider. I don't think that many developers are concerned about what the players will think because of course players often can't tell and don't care.

Hey, game 1 dev here! This was a really cool concept, I had lots of fun participating. It’s great watching you guys guess, at the end of the day I have to agree that the importance of a game engine is just to the comfort of its developer. All tools are great so long as fun games are being made!

Yooo Godot dev here, had a lot of fun making the game :)
Thank you for the opportunity 🙏

Construct 3 dev here. Wow, the guessers have a really tough challenge ahead, good luck!

It really depends on the creativity of the dev and how well they have mastered the game engine

Game 1: Construct
Game 2: Game Maker
Game 3: Construct
Game 4: Unity
Game 5: Godot

All Godot is my guess. It's cool to see people picking out little details that seem familiar or specific to a certain game engine, but that could also just be down to the individual developers and how they code the game I suppose.

My predictions are

Game 1: Construct
Game 2: Gdevelop
Game 3: Godot
Game 4: Gamemaker
Game 5: Unity

Game 1: Gamemaker (the rendering looks like it for some reason idk)
Game 2: Godot (my current fav engine, but the char not falling on death makes me think weird godot physics)
Game 3: Unity (The camera was Cinemachine and had way to much x dampening, some of the platforms are 3d, while all these engines can do that, unity and godot are better at doing that. Also the low pixel effect looks like low res unity camera without aa on)
Game 4: GDevelop (I don't have any experience with this program, so just a guess based on process of elimination)
Game 5: Construct 3 (Screen shaking is a pretty easy thing to add and the animations being weird is classic construct)

This was an awesome video, I really liked the message at the end in saying that it really does not matter for the most part, if you just want to make cool games, use whatever you want. I'm excited to see which is which!
I've been watching your channel for a couple of months now and I always forget that you don't have 100 thousand + subs. Keep it up you will be there in no time.

Also I still hate how you say Godot, even if it's the proper way. Its like gif vs jif to me, lol

I was very impressed with "Halls Of Torment", I downloaded the demo, looked at the executable and it showed up a begin Godot. I later bought the full version. Its not normally my kind of game, I like 3D shooter, looters. I have not spent much time playing it but did really enjoy it. I am trying to learn unity at the moment, but quite happy to try unreal and godot in the future.

Damn, this one was really hard! I gotta go with Godot for the first one, GDevelop for the second because of the strange lighting effects, Construct for the third because the fonts have a few aliasing issues I've encountered a fair bit myself, GMS for the fourth and Unity for the last one.

I'm kinda torn between the unity and Gdevelop one, but I hope I at least get some right :)

I'm not here to guess. I just wanted to say thanks for the message you are trying to convey. It's true that the engine doesn't matter as long as the game is fun. That said, if the developers don't know what they're doing, it's just as easy to make a horrible game in any engine. I'd love to see a 3D version with the same restrictions using the same assets across multiple engines.

its hard to tell when it comes to 2d, but its easy to tell when it comes to 3d. because unreal has unique shader and shadow, and i can tell that's unreal engine when the first time i saw it

This is more about the person making it than the engine. The same person should try to make the exact same game with all the engines and see if there are some differences due to limitations and so on

Perhaps for retro pixel art 2D it doesn't matter as much but the bigger engines typically have way more tools for making your game beautiful such as advanced post processing effects that are multiplatform.

Nice experiment, I wouldn't mind winning an addon for godot or something ;)
1-GDevelop
2-GameMaker
3-Unity
4-Godot
5-Construct

Quality of the game is down to the quality of the developer. That's the clear takeaway, but it's a hard pill to swallow for many. Folks want to believe that if they choose the "right" engine, that will elevate their skills and guarantee quality, and by extension, success.

I'm a Unity 3d dev, I agree #3 looks like a poorly-tuned Cinemachine follow-cam, but #4 looks like it's using some help from the Asset Store. No prior exp with the other engines, so I'd just be guessing. But the skill on display is solid, esp at Fiverr prices - don't work so cheaply, folks!

Ehm, the reason to chose one engine over the other has very little to do with what the end user thinks of it, but with what engine suits your needs the most and is most comfortable to use.

Okay, so if we're going from the players' perspective, yeah, for the majority of users, it truly does not matter.
HOWEVER, this becomes less true when the user needs to run the game in a specific way.
If I need to add some parameters, or run via Wine, or mod the game, or even find specific data on the drive, then what engine is used matters A LOT.

Also, from the development side of things, I completely disagree that it does not matter. Some engines are simply better for certain things than others, as they have strengths and weakness that should be considered. If you are developing "for fun", then sure, whatever floats your boat. But in a serious production, picking the wrong engine for the kind of project you're working on can be a serious hindrance and, sometimes, utterly cripple the end result.

What I'm trying to say is: Can you make a 2D pixel platformer in Unreal? Most certainly. Should you? Very debatable.
