I got a 2011 MacBook Pro from a friend. I’m trying to factory reset it, but Macintosh HD is missing from the disk utility section. Any advice? I know this video is really old but the new ways of resetting don’t work on this old MacBook

What Account would you need to sign into, is it the account on the iCloud or the account that first activated the device?

For all the comments saying “A required download is missing”, when you erase ur SSD or HHD EVERYTHING is erased including ur OS. I assume Mac has no server support to do reinstalls of the OS for this machine.

My recommendation is to get a bootable Mac OS system onto a USB drive to manually install the OS instead of relying on apples servers. This process allowed me to revive my 2008 Macbook, it should work for any other operating system.

If not, try and boot Linux 🐧

I had a problem with this. I followed all steps but it wouldn't let me install high Sierra again (some message about not having all the componenets)
Then rebooted it again tried to install with Mac Lion and still didn't work. Had help with apple phone-in but I have been told it would be a lot of money to fix it (more than its value) so now computer is useless when before I could at least access it and use it
