In the cruel pet trade, betta fish (aka “Siamese fighting fish”) are fighting for their lives. Pet shops, discount superstores, florists, and even websites sell bettas who are forced to live in minuscule cups, small bowls, and even flower vases. Many people who buy these fish on a whim don’t know enough—if anything—about proper betta care, which is more complex and expensive than they realize.

Please don’t buy betta fish or support pet stores that sell betta fish.

No fish should be forced to live and die inside a minuscule bowl.

if you buy betta fish from these pet stores that support putting them in small cups, just remember this. you're supporting the trade. the more fish you buy, the more fish they'll put in these sad cups. so what you're doing is helping the store get more and earn more from these fish and future fish you are saving. if you really have to get a betta fish, make sure they give you a HUGE discount though. thank you for saving the fish anyway. im sure theyre happy w you.

Buying them makes the company think they can treat them badly and get just as much money. What you should do is go to places that are willing to give sick ones for free, so you can truly rescue them without supporting the company.

I bought one, after that i saw this video, i was so sad… I have a giant tank now prepared for my poor baby, Pixel. :( I’m more sad that more fish are taken from their homes after buying, also i gave my fish a food, this will help it, also because it’s filled with vitamins.

If you feel strongly about this you can still have a betta, you just need to get one from a reputable breeder instead of petco.

It’s absurd to suggest that ANY website selling betta must keep them in cups. Bettasquad literally has pictures of them in their tanks and those fish are way too reliably healthy and active to have been kept in cups.

You don’t need to never buy a betta, you just need to do some research.

Maybe in chain pet stores, but my LPS has a pretty decent betta wall each tank is 5 gallons. I think theres 12 tanks total. They also get them from reputable breeders that put a lot of money into the care of their product before it reaches pet stores. Cheapest betta is like $20 though. They have a couple giants in 10 gallon tanks each the cheapest being $45 at any given time. Ive seen a dead betta at this store maybe twice in the 6 years ive gone to this store (one of them actually being today). Any that did have issues did look a bit older though. The rest of them were definitely younger and very personable. A couple grumpy ones that hid but were healthy and just moody.

One I thought was dying but it just wanted to be greeted and then was acting like a water puppy which I know some bettas can be quite the drama queens like Oscars. Talking to the fish room supervisor when the store opens tomorrow about this one I want to rescue or even try to strike s discount at least as she wasnt in today for a beautiful black body gold face plakat that looks blind in one eye in one eye that I seen there is something common for its breed and several others called diamond eye apparently no matter how much care the breeder puts but this fish was swimming around not a care in the world otherwise and had enough eye sight in the other eye to see someone check him out if the was at the face of the tank and come say hi, go back to what he was doing.

Cheaper giant betta was like a happy oscar greeting you too. Wish I had the money for it cause I have the perfect 20 gallon tank for one.
