How Laparoscopic Surgery Works

This video shows a surgeon using graspers to fold a tiny paper crane, because they’re practicing for laparoscopic surgery. These tools help surgeons work through tiny incisions, reducing pain and recovery time. Their invention over a century ago revolutionized how surgeons are able to operate on people. Now, they're getting even more advanced, which is changing what it looks like to do surgery and what it might look like if you get surgery...

More personally, I had a laparoscopic surgery a few years ago. My recovery time was pretty short, I barely have a scar. Without these tools, it would have been a much harder process. So, thank you to the people who keep making medicine better.

I’ve had two laparoscopic surgeries. One was done robotically and one was done manually. Let me tell you the recovery from the robotic surgery was WAY easier than from the manual surgery. So so grateful for the technology that is making our lives better like this.

The idea of surgeons practicing major surgery by folding tiny paper cranes is kind of adorable.

Had a pretty invasive brain surgery a few years ago, walked out of the hospital 3 days later. It’s amazing what they can do nowadays

Me: “Doc why does my insides feel funny?”
Doctor: “Oh yeah I folded your liver into a crane”

Thanks Cleo! My Dad's 1967 gallbladder removal was major surgery followed by 2+ weeks of painful recovery. It left a huge scar. My 2014 laparoscopic gallbladder removal took about 2 hours. 12 hours after waking up, I was home. I resumed light-duty work at home within a couple of days. I can't see the scar. The suffering & risk reduction were huge.

My dads a surgeon and during an opening of a new hospital i got to try the robots and its surprisingly intuitive to control and understand. You just move your hand and the arms mirrors it perfectly.

Besides my mouth surgery, I had a gallbladder surgery and it was all laparoscopic. I’m blown away by modern medicine big time. I’ve had quite a few surgeries a left ankle, reconstruction, shoulder surgeries, and everything was done laparoscopic except for the ankle. I’m just grateful to live in this time.

My kidney stone removal was laparoscopic! When I first heard about these machines when I was younger, I was sooo skeptical, but it turns out they have lower mortality and complication rates than regular surgery! So grateful for these things

I had a laparoscopic discectomy. Very minimally invasive and I was in and out of the hospital in 4 hours. Just decades ago, I would have had to stay days and potentially need another surgery just months later. Medical practice has made leaps and bounds

I had my appendix removed laparoscopicly!! The healing time was about a full week until I could really use my abdomen without a lot of pain, but still super fast! I have so much love for everyone who took such good care of me including my amazingly talented surgeon ♥️♥️

I had a robotically assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy a couple years ago, and i felt back to normal before the week was out, and the scars are barely visible. Science is incredible.

I just had my cataracts done - the incision in my eyes was so small they didn't even need a stitch! Truly amazing stuff.

I've had 3 so far. The 1st would have left me w/ a 15"+ scar & taken 8-12 wks recovery; instead I just have 3 tiny tiny little scars & recovered in a month! So grateful for this technology!

My wife had this kind of surgery with the Davinci system, a partial hysterectomy. It was out-patient surgery, she was home by 4 pm the same day, and recovered pretty quickly.

I'm an American living in Thailand. A few years ago I had surgery on my right shoulder. The 4 tendons that connected to the rotator cuff had been torn loose. As they were taking me into the OR I noticed all the strange set up. The Doctor explained that the surgery would be added by a robot. I thought that was pretty cool.

The recovery was much quicker too.❤
