The idea of Greece as a country is a pretty modern concept.

The byzantine empire was essentially greek, they weren't ruled by foreign empires until the ottomans arrived.

It should be noted that the Byzantine Empire was essentially ruled by Greeks and not the Greeks being ruled by Byzantines.

The concept of a Greek nation had been around since the Bronze Age, with pretty much every city state aspiring to unite the Greek peoples under themselves; the concept was realized under the Philipos the 2nd of makedon. Since then, the Greeks were always recognized themselves as a single people with ancient city state rivalries relegated to more of local feuds rather than any serious identity. After the rise of the eastern Roman Empire, many Greeks started identifying as Romans, since the terms were interchangeable after the western Roman Empire fell, leaving the ancient Latin Roman identity to be killed in favor of the newer, more Germanic, Italians. The greeks continued to identify as Romans and Greeks until around the late 1800s when the idea of being both Greek and roman died out in favor of the idea of pan-Hellenism and the uniting of all Greek peoples in Ionia and Cyprus.

The desecration of Hagia Sophia is one of the reasons as well. Besides Jerusalem, it is one of the most holiest places for the Orthodox faith.

This conflict really begins a thousand years ago. With the conflicts between the Byzantine and Seljuk empires.

The Byzantine empire was technically Roman, but it’s people were Greeks and even the official language was Greek since the 7th century! It was as Greek as the Holy Roman Empire was German!
