Hi Guys,
In todays video I discuss how old Volvos prioritised reliability over performance and economy!

Built like tanks... built to last. As you say they are over-engineered in every way. but you know you're safe in them and if looked after will give you years of service.
Bought all my Volvos second hand with varying mileages, and ran everyone for at least 7yrs, whereas before Volvo I would change my cars every couple of years.
The saying 'once a Volvo owner always a Volvo owner' is pretty much true.

Like your videos, recently purchased an XC70 D5 2015 and have found your videos really helpful so thank you. Averaging 29 MPG round town and high 30s on a run however tend to carry a lot of weight in car most times

Safety and longevity are paramount in my view. I am happy to make the trade for those over fuel economy. Good summary.

I drive an XC90 and an S80 T6 AWD with 300 hp both, not the best mileage but very very fun to drive and the engine notes are well worth the extra, quite comfortable and fast Swedish tanks.

I own a P80 V70 T5 and a P3 V70 D3. The old one is built better. The new one isn't bad but Ford's influence is felt. Most failures on modern cars (also on Volvos) are auxilliary components, sensors, etc. - not the engine itself (except timing chains).

The very first D5 engine Volvo made (for 2001-2005) was actually VERY economical. 163bhp and 340Nm.
It was definitely de-tuned though, because Volvo sold that exact same engine in boats, just running a different software map, and it was putting out 220bhp.
The original D5s had no DPF, no swirl flaps, no throttle valve... It was just a straight forward, Common Rail diesel engine, with an EGR valve, with almost nothing to go wrong on them.
My D5 has close to 500, 000 miles on it and it feels like it will last forever, and its fun to drive. However, the newer versions of the D5 engine the fuel economy was noticably worse until they brought in the twin turbo edition.

Just bought a 2013 s60 t5 from a city about 75 miles away from home.

My jaw was permanently dropped as I hit the highway and watched the average mpg go from 22 in the city to 44 mpg by the time I got home.

And that was doing an average of 75mph, and flooring it up to 5k rpms for 30 seconds every 10 miles or so to burn out some crud in the cat. Not economical driving at all

I noticed the flexibility of BMW when it hit my 53 S60 front nearside just below the head lamp, i drove home his had to be lifted . I refitted the panels back in place that afternoon .

Its a grear review! My 3rd volvo v70 5d within last 7 years. I was impressed by s60 5d but later made a mistake using so many other diesel cars, back to V70 5D again after a year of bmw 525d. There is no comparison with the early mk2 version volvos with any other car. Diesel leak issue from pump was sorted out by a local mechanic and its driving like a dream. 157k miles with volvo service history means a starter. Comfort of leather seats and reliability of volvo engineering is the pleasure and guarantee of its own. There is no other car that can give you such a comfort for merely £600 lol

I have a V60 D5 205ps and I remapped it to 262ps and 620nm of torque. It has done 185k and seems fine with just regular oil and filter changes. I do them every 6 months or 6k, which ever comes first. Air and fuel filters once a year. Look after these engines and they will look after you!! It still averages 44mpg

I’ve got a 2009 v70 2 ltr manual box . It’s done over 182, 000 and recently been to Aberdaron in north Wales and achieved 64.2 mpg which was a 145 miles trip.
It’s got FSH with 17 service stamps. Everything works and it’s the best car I’ve ever had, and I’ve had some cars.
Happy motoring 😃👍
