On artic convoy duty returning from Murmansk in April 1942, Edinburgh while carrying 4.5 tons of gold bullion back to the UK was hit by a torpedo on her starboard side from the German submarine followed soon after by second torpedo into Edinburgh's stern, wrecking her steering equipment and crippling her. While attempting to return to Murmansk under tow Edinburgh was attacked by 3 large german destroyers Hermann Schoemann, Z24 and Z25 and despite fighting off the attack took another torpedo leaving her barely held together by deck and keel plating. Her crew abandoned ship and finally sunk by a torpedo from HMS Foresight.
