The royal navy were frustrated with coles and his pushing for having a ship designed in the way he believed to be best.. the navy's chief architect Reed was critical of Coles' design and of the yard in charge of building.. Lairds. The royal navy had hms monarch under construction at the same time to their preferred design specifications and did their best to distance themselves from Coles and his ship.. it appears that Coles had some support from the press and public pressure allowed the construction to go ahead. Constructor Reed critical of Captain when he visited Lairds and saw her under construction.

Did it sink because of its radical design or was it just not tested enough?
