"...Inflexible's hull design could not accommodate these larger weapons."

So, Inflexible was er....inflexible?

A mere 25 years from Inflexible's commissioning to Dreadnought's graphically illustrates the huge advances naval technology over that time period.

That description of the poor ship at the end is one of the most eloquent ways I've heard of calling a ship really ugly.

“Can you accommodate some larger guns?”
“WHY DO YOU THINK IM CALLED INFLEXABLE?!”

By Jove what a splendidly quirky old lass she was. 10/10 would definitely captain her!

Despite the rather eloquent "rip" there at the end, I love the ships of this transitional period. There's something so evocative of the period in their appearance.

It's really interesting hearing how much a player Italy was in the Iron Clad and early pre dreadnought era of warships.

It seems, the two or so decades between the fall of Napoleon III's France and the rise of Germany's navy, Italy was the Royal Navy's biggest drive to innovate and one up.

I don’t care what everyone else though HMS Inflexible is still one of my favorite ironclad battleships
Fantastic video as always Drach, thank you sincerely

This is as close to the 'By Jove' episode as it is possible to get in the real world. I wonder if she ever managed to set her own sailing rig on fire?

Forgotten weapons did a video of the 100 ton gun, on Malta.

Loved this boat since I first found out about her a few years ago. An absolute armed and armored bathtub, and thicker than a bowl of oatmeal.

Such are the aesthetic judgments which are inextricably tied to functionality: it’s beautiful if it works and ugly if it don’t.

The most interesting thing about this ship was the politics that broke out during her construction when ex Chief Constructor Reed - still smarting from the unjust caning he got over the HMS Captain disaster - raised issues about stability if the unarmoured ends were riddled.

High voltage arc lamps!

Probably sounded like a bug zapper as the crew moved about the ship

Rats! I got here too late to throw out inflexible puns. Someone else already provided pun-ishment.

You said it, Drach... Poor old Inflexible indeed.

Maybe a video about the effectiveness of these types of guns might be warranted. As I understand it the barrel life of this kind of weapon was very short so I imagine they would discourage practice shooting that fact alone must make accurate shooting really dicey.

I’m sitting here drinking my coffee, recovering from an injury and I think to myself “Self: I haven’t watched a drach video in a few days, I need to watch one now”. So I finish off a Mark Felton video(great video about the defense of the Reichstag in ‘45) and here it is a brand new video about another greatly named British ship.
