My grandfather served on this ship, James 'Jim' Pullen. he was on board when they had the fight with the Hipper. Afterwards he was transferred to destroyers where he spent time escorting convoys in the Arctic before being sent to the Indian Ocean and then the Pacific. I remember him telling me war stories as a kid, I was always enchanted by his stories. Of course he left out all the fear and the devastation shell hits caused. It wasn't until many years later that I realized he was a hero, along with so many others. Miss you Gan Gan.

Naval Architect:"Okay guys, we are designing this ship with the anticipation that someone, somewhere, is going to blow up the Washington Treaty at some point!"

If by taking damage from Hipper in exchange for protecting a troop convoy then she did her duty well.

The description: "The Berwick, a County class punching bag of the Royal Navy, is today's subject" though

1:42 I love a bit of engineering foresight, allowing for future improvements to be almost modular in nature... not that this happened here, of course! Banish such thoughts!

The white and buff paint scheme for the China Station looked real sharp in photo 🙂

I don't consider a cruiser taking a pasting while distracting an enemy ship from sinking troop transports bad luck.

Of course, "bad luck" is relative, considering her survival of the war.

BERWICK was the last of His Majesty's Ships in which my father served as a petty officer of the Royal Naval Reserve. He joined her shortly after D-Day and worked her radar as a "qualified knob twiddler" until his demobilization. Fortunately for my siblings and me, she seemed a much luckier ship once he came aboard.
