When I travel in or out of the US I rely on the hotel doorman for advice on no go areas. Don't trust the concierge because he is getting paid to recommend certain things.

It's specially safe for US citizens for the most part. The cartels know it's a mistake and bad for business. You might get mugged by your average Juan though

Yep...and just like the US, there are places that are absolutely not safe. The people in Mexico know how important the tourist trade is but, not long ago one of the Cartels killed three Americans because they were mistaken for drug dealers.
