Can you get shredded on a high carbohydrate diet? Hell yes you can and in fact I want to discuss some research that suggests it may be more beneficial than a low carb high fat option.

Research Discussed:

1. Hall KD, Chen KY, Guo J, et al. Energy expenditure and body composition changes after an isocaloric ketogenic diet in overweight and obese men. Am J Clin Nutr. 2016;104(2):324–333. doi: 10.3945/ajcn.116.133561. [PMC free article] [PubMed] [CrossRef] [Google Scholar]

Your videos singlehandedly broke my 10 year carbophobia. I've haven't looked or felt this good in years and I'm now set to compete in the next 9 months. Thanks Paul.

This is a great piece of advice. I know what he's talking about by experience. I tried a very low carb diet for a few weeks, with a caloric deficit to get shreded. I didn't only lose 70 percent of my weightlifting performance, but also my belly fat reduction halted. I deflated around my muscles. I started eating carbs again, and my waist started to trim down again, and I got my total performance at the gmy back. Carbs are a bodybuilder's friends during both bulk and cut.

Great video with solid advice. Anyone thinking cutting Carbs needs to consider just cleaning up their eating first. I love how he talks about clean vs dirty carbs. That is the real key right there.

I'm currently cutting and mostly having a high carb diet, and it's honestly been the easiest cut I've done! Great video Coach Paul!

Nailed it! Carbs are training friendly. I've tried to limit them in the past but never again after my latest get lean phase.

LOVE the advise. Back in January 2020 I started a KETO diet. Wanted to lose 44 lbs. I started I learned about all these recepies and foods to eat. Saw many videos and worked out very hard. Saw videos and a couple of documentaries and like you say, INSULINE and CARBS are SATANIZED. I was very happy with what i ate. KETO this. KETO that. Cheese, steak, bacon. PB. KETO Brownies. I lost about 26 lbs. Then i stopped losing weight. I got stuck on 220 lbs. I was like this for 8 months, Then I went to a nutricionist. I weighted 224 lbs and on a 20% body fat percentage. She put me on carbs. Lots. Whole grain wheat, corn, and fruits. And the results where almost immediate. I've been on this diet (she twicks it every 4 weeks) for 6 weeks and I've lost 5 pounds, but like you say. My muscles are popping and looking very lean. My goal is 13% body fat. I should be able to get there in another 4 weeks. Love my diet by the way. Thanks for the advise and Ill start to follow.

carbs are gold! I remember when I shed 30kg after graduation from High School in 2003, I only ate some white rice with some meat and vegetables and a bottle of milk everyday and I do many running and cycling. And when I was on keto diet around 2019-2021, I was very unhappy and energy-deprived! Think about many Asians including Chinese, Taiwanese and Japanese who can stay lean very easily! Think about the boxer Naoya Inoue! They have very low body fat percentage yet very light and powerful and QUICK!Lacking carbs is far worse than feeling trendy with keto.

I really wish I found this channel six months ago. He doesn't overcomplicated things, and he said his reasons of doing things.

I know this video is 3 years old but I still wanted to say that I agree 100% with you, Paul. I am so tired of hearing about Keto and Carnivore and all the supposed miracles that result from it. I'm surprised a cure for cancer hasn't been accredited to both of them. I think its pure lunacy and it's created a societal paranoia about carbohydrates that continually gets more pronounced with each passing day. Just like with most fads, both will probably fade away in time but all these doctors and gurus on Youtube spouting off about the wonders of low or zero carb diets are not only irresponsible in my opinion but over the long term, detrimental to one's health. I respect your opinions and enjoy the video content you supply, so keep up the great work, Paul!

This is such crucial information. I was on a really low carb, low calorie diet for about 4 months and yes, I lost weight but it was not sustainable for me and when i started adding calories, I gained weight. Now, I am eating more calories but also eating carbohydrates (good ones like oats, Ezekiel bread, white and sweet potatoes, pasta and rice) with every meal and the weight is coming off. Not only that, but I have to say, I feel so much better. So carbs are NOT bad, if you eat the correct macros.

I got really lean for bikini competitions on medium carbs. I only cut carbs on peak week. I like carbs in my diet as they give me energy to perform in the gym. I notice on peak week I cannot lift as heavy when carbs are very low.

Good info Paul. There is so much misinformation out there. Keep it simple, eat clean, work hard, results will follow. Thankyou for your insight.

It seems that so many totally sedentary people lost some fat with low carb that people thought carbs were the problem. Carbs are awesome fuel for those of us that are active! Tasty too!

Great video. From my limited experience I agree 100% with all you said.
I can't believe the likes of Jason Fung and even Ken Berry now (for whom I have great respect) saying CICO is totally irrelevant!
I'd love to see them try and compete in a physique event! LOL! Keep up the fantastic work and thanks for the simple and concise truth you convey to us in all your videos.

I start to think that a lot of people call carbs the junk foods and blame them for that. Living on fruits, carrots, potatoes, rice and lean meats nose-to-tail is the easiest experience I ever had after years of dieting, lowcarb, keto. 1800kcal in rest days and around 2200 in training days. I don't feel like dieting!

Good one paul. I also have been following Dr Sam Robbins and although i dont agree and follow half of what he says, this rule of his appeals to me and i follow. Basically he says have food which are either rich in (carbs and protein) or (fat and protein) and avoid food with high carbs and fat. And this has worked for me. This made me notice that nature surprisingly doesn't have much of high carb high fat food. So by default nature also only prefers either one of carbs or fat as energy storage and protein for organisms development.
