You also have to remember that the camp followers were numerous for other reasons. Many families of the soldiers couldn’t sustain themselves without their husbands, so accompanying was sometimes a must. The wife’s of the soldiers also took care of the cooking, cleaning etc. The nobles participating had their own retinues of pages, servants and so on with them. It’s not difficult to see why the number of camp followers equaled to the number of actual soldiers. This is hardly a new or ancient practice, there were tons of civilians that accompanied Napoleon into Russia for example.
