If you’ve been passed over for promotion (again and again) even though your performance reviews are stellar and you KNOW you are ready for the next level… you need to watch this. High performing ambitious professionals often end up dealing with career stagnation because they are too good at their jobs, and it brings up these three dynamics that hold you back from getting that promotion at work. I've learned over my years of working to never give 100 percent at work. I only give 50 percent now. When I give 60 percent they really love me and at 70 percent they want to promote me. Worked at a job giving 100 percent and they loved me and my hard work and kept looking right over me for every promotion. Left the job and started a new strategy and it's been great. Now whenever I want more money if my job doesn't give me a promotion, i just go for a new job. Don't even waste time arguing, just leave

First things first here from someone who has worked for a long time: no ONE is indispensable, you can be replaced. Having said this, she is right, when I left a certain job, it took 2 people to replace me AND they had to pay a Manager 10K bonus to not quit because the work I was doing there was tricky and had a lot of tough personalities involved. Staying in a job for longer than 5 years without any movement or opportunities to move on and grow within a company is a BIG red flag.

A coworker at my last job got bypassed for a promotion because she was everything you described: a top performer, knew all the answers, worked long hours, and very likable and agreeable to work with. Instead they hired someone externally for the position and he would leave work early, claim OT, and never learned a thing. Karma is real.

What I've learned in my years in the business world is that the harder that you work, the more & more & more they expect you to do & if you don't produce more, you are then blacklisted or fired.

I had a friend who had an expression, "you know what you become when you're the best ditch digger?... The best ditch digger."

I wish companies just understood how dangerous it is to not promote employees or give employees raises. The minute that employee feels undervalued even after years of work they will likely leave. It does not help you to keep training new people. Find ways to value the employees you have.

I am literally on the way out from this situation. After working 6 years in the same company with promises of promotion, there was an opening in a function a little bit higher on the ladder. My boss literally told me he won't promote me because he has a very hard time replacing me. So I made my conclusion and gave in my two months (yeah I live in Belgium so it's a bit longer) and starting at a new company in february. Fuck him and this bs company

The reason why most managers and supervisors get to where their are is because they don't perform and think outside the box. They conform and obey and be a yes man. That is why people with a free mind do poor in the corporate world. Also most of them have a huge ego and that is why they fire all the free thinkers and keep all the sheep.

As someone who just left a 35 year career in an executive position, my advice is: go find your happiness in life! Escape from the handcuffs of the corporation where even if you think you’re making good money, the truth is, you’re making them way more than they will ever pay you. You’re a cog in the wheel most likely living above your means a d trapping yourself to work forever. Get out while your young enough to enjoy life

Top performers in my industry don't always get promoted. The folks that play politics are the ones that do. Also folks that aren't threatening to the boss.

At a former job, I really wanted to move up from data entry to program specialist, which involved talking to patients. Data is technically the hardest part, and I did my job well, and the boss hoped another "me" would come along to take my place. Never happened, and people I trained started moving up, even though they didn't grasp data entry as well as I did. The final straw for me was when I found out I'd be teaching a whole group of new recruits data entry, but then they would learn from someone else the program specialist position. So not only were they getting the job I wanted, I was training people that were going to make more than me. Granted, I now have a job relevant to my college degree like I always wanted, but that experience was so heartbreaking.

This video is spot on and so important. Please don't assume that your manager has your best interest in your career. I've been in the workforce for 25 years and am just now learning this lesson. The reason is that I've always strived to help people and mistakenly assumed that others were the same. While many are helpful, many others are not. The workforce is wrought with insecure saboteurs who will not only not help you but go out of their way to sabotage you.

What I've noticed in all my DECADES of work, is those who get others fired get promoted EVERY SINGLE TIME.

The only people who get promoted are the ones that the boss has a soft heart for and also fantasize sleeping with.

Where ever I go, I always stuck with tasks that no one wants to do, less visible yet critical tasks. Even if I get visible project, Chad always manage get himself involved at the last minute and takes the credit.

Jennifer, I could have really used your advice 10 years ago. I worked at a toxic workplace that never promoted me even though my work won awards, and they would give me company bonuses and awards. After 12 years, I got fed up and went back to school to get my MFA just to escape that place. Once I left I heard through the grape vine that they missed all the things I did.

This is something I've been thinking about for a long time.
Those who get promoted are NOT the ones who get things done.
Because, if they get promoted, then who will get things done in their place?
People who detect and underline problems or critical situations are usually the ones who get a career advance.
So if you want to climb the corporate ladder, speak out what the big problems are, but never ever try to solve them.

My boss had no degree or experience when he got his job. He brown nosed his way there. I could not advance at all because I ended up having more education (BA) and experience than him. I was the biggest threat to him. I would leapfrog him for any promotions.

This happened to me at my last job. I was the top guy Nationwide in the company at what I did. I worked over 40 hours a week, and people I trained, along with week old employees go promoted as leads over me. When I asked how did that happen, because it was the ELEPHANT in the building, management gave an excuse like we really like what you do, we just don't fill now is the time for you to take this kind of position. People quit, and took extended leaves and me (prior to me wising up) came in everyday, never late and worked 10+ hours shifts daily. I did everything in each department. Then I wanted to transfer to another location due to it being closer to me. They responded with the grass is always greener on the other side. I trained the employees in 3 different departments for 3 separate locations. I know all this too well. Overbooked and overlooked.

Also, make sure you really want to be promoted. I'm a retired computer programmer and am not good with people. Decades ago, I had the opportunity to apply for my boss' job, as he was moving on. I gave it some thought at home and quickly realized: they would lose a good worker and gain a lousy manager. Lose/Lose. I like doing technical things, not dealing with people. Becoming a manager would be torture for somebody like me.
