I think one clear sign of toxic boss is when you used to love/like your job but because of behaviour of your boss you don't like it anymore.

When it comes to bosses I've done both..been patient..."never talk back" and been a push over...and it's didn't work..still got canned....now I tell them how I feel with an honest calm and confident face...still get canned... That's why you gotta stick to your values

I have one rule, don't expose yourself to any toxic person. Just imagine having a boss that no matter what you do it isn't right. I had to put a boss in his place because he didn't know what he wanted as his mind constantly was changing and nothing I could do was right no matter what T I followed. Everyone on the team felt equally frustrated. After a year of dealing with this toxic asshole and on my final day when I gave my resignation as I had a job lined up I asked him, "Do you think support, encouragement and gratitude are important attributes for a successful managers should have?" I then handed him my resignation and walked out. A month later another key person on his team left as well. My current boss now is a great guy to work with and my job is once again enjoyable.

I feel like with my boss there’s no right answer. What she wants changes from week to week, day by day, and like today hour by hour. Putting me behind on what I need to do.

I had a difficult boss in my first job!!! And I hated every time I had to meet with her. But I survived by focusing on my part of the job and doing my best. Great tips. Thanks.

I'm dealing with a bully boss who plays mind games and sets you up to get "into trouble" . There is no working with him. i'ts impossible. He doesn't even let you know what he expects because he wants you to be wrong so he can bully. he's a evil narcissist and sometimes you just gotta get away.

Reminds me of a manager I went to for advice on a bad boss saying "have you tried talking them about it" 😂 If you go to death row in jail you will find a lot of innocent men or say they will tell you. A bad boss doesnt just stop being a bad boss because you are nice to them, or talk to them or work hard. A bad boss is at their core an unhappy person. And like a drowning person they will drag you down with them if you try to help. The only thing you can do is save yourself and let them sink.

I love what you said "Don't try to fix your boss!" It's hard for those of us are fixers:)

No toxic environment is worth your well being. Screw staying there and living with it. Find another job, sooner or later HR will figure him/her out why there is such a turn over rate. Professor in college told me (the whole class) "You can get paid $50 dollars an hour but if your boss is an asshole, you wont stay long." no truer words have been spoken. Peace out

I’ve thought if quitting almost once or twice a month. I’ve cried to myself at work at least three times.

I have a really hard time with a mean boss because I'm very insecure and blame myself for every little thing that goes wrong at work.. and I always have this fear that people think I'm bad at my job or lazy because there's always something left on my plate that I'm unable to get to

Excellent tips...over the years I used all your tips (including documenting) and learned to live with it.... on the other hand...happiness is the key. People quit their jobs not because of the company, it is only because of the difficult boss they have to deal with it everyday. In fact, "dealing" with a difficult boss everyday is not good for your mental health...you bring home everyday on the kind of things you had to deal with at work. So, my advise is try to be happy...find another way. You cant control to change the boss, but you can control what you can do. You dont have to deal with the difficult boss everyday. Find another job and quit!! Belive me, just the action of quitting itself will bring happiness to you!!

Thanks for the useful tips!

I especially loved #4 about staying true to your values. As a matter of fact, I had a similar situation to yours a few years back: I had a difficult boss and almost thought about quitting but I loved my job. I dealt with the situation by putting all my love and creativity into my job, instead of trying to "fix" my boss.

Love what you said about knowing your boss and getting more information if you need it. No matter what kind of person your boss is, having clear instructions is always important to do your best and avoid all miscommunication. I also agree that you shouldn't blame yourself but sometimes you do have to adjust your approach.
