Gareth Southgate's story as England manager - EXPLAINED

Gareth Southgate's story with England could end up finishing after the conclusion of Euro 2024.

Many believe, after nearly 8 years in charge, Southgate's chapter as manager is coming to an end - regardless of whether England win the tournament or not.

Despite heavy criticism for negative tactics, poor performances and results, and a lack of identity with a new golden generation of players, looking back on Southgate's entire career tells a much different story.

Jacob Culshaw explains just how poor England were before Southgate took over, and retells the story of a moment at Euro 96 that may still haunt Southgate to this day. With England qualifying for the knockout rounds in Germany, and with a favourable route through to the final, Southgate now has the opportunity to finish his story in glory.

How it really happened....

Southgate gets given the caretaker job as a failed club manager with horrible credentials. Due to the FA's incompetency and a lack of options, he gets the full time job following a draw and a win over a really poor Scotland side.

Russia World Cup
We come second in a group with two clear weaker teams, losing to the one team of a similar calibre.
We only get through the round of 16 on penalties against Columbia.
We beat Sweden, one of the poorest World Cup quarter final opponents you could ask for.
As favourites in the semi-final we lose to Croatia.

Euro 2020
We win the group with some solid defensive football. However, there is a worrying lack of attacking output, and it becomes clear that Southgate doesn't want to play a brand of football synonymous with successful teams.
In one of the best games of Southgate's career, we beat one of the worst Germany sides in recent years.
We have a kind run to the final, facing Ukraine and Denmark.
We then lose in the final on penalties to a team that will later fail to qualify for the World Cup.

Qatar World Cup
We top an incredibly easy group, while failing to beat the USA
We beat a disorganised Senegal side in the round of 16, before getting beaten by a good France team.

Germany Euros
We top an easy group, scoring two goals and failing to beat Denmark and Slovenia.

Throughout all of this, Southgate has implemented a miserable, negative style of football that has sucked all joy out of watching England. We have a terrible record outside of major competitions, particularly in the build up to tournaments. His tournament runs have been built upon extremely favourable group stage and knockout draws, with us finding ourselves being outplayed by teams with much less talent.

England currently has the future Balon' Dor winning and La Liga player of the year, the top goal scorer in Europe, the Premier League player of the year, the likes of Saka, Palmer and Watkins, all of whom are in the top 20 goal involvements in Europe, a world class DM, a world class ball-playing centre back, the best right back in the world and maybe the most gifted passer in world football.... There is no excuse. Southgate has done a horrible job and has to go!

Bs mate this is the worst team I've ever seen in my 60 years . I have never seen a goalkeeper touch the ball so much ever this European cup is dreadful in the first 20 minutes 3 yellow cards for England and Pickford touched the ball more times then the 3 forwards combined. They don't deserve to go any further with this team . Sorry England fans
