Gareth Southgate on his future as England manager and Euro 2024 final against Spain

Gareth Southgate has said it is 'emotionally impossible to make a logical decision' on whether to stay on as England manager at the moment - even if he wins the European Championship.

In an interview with Sky's Rob Harris, ahead of Sunday's final with Spain in Berlin, Southgate insisted he had "improved the credibility" of English football - having felt hurt by criticism earlier in the tournament due to the team's sluggish progress.

I thought competition would be a disaster for Southgate and it almost was against Slovakia.

He’s proved me and many others wrong, he’s a good manager and has achieved a lot for England, I didn’t think he had more to offer us after the World Cup.. he’s clearly better than people give him credit for 100%.

Gareth Southgate is the most successful coach England ever had. 2x final at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. Semi final at WC. Easily qualified from the groups. The 1966 FIFA World Cup featured only 16 teams and all of them were from Europe and South America while none from Africa, Asia and elsewhere from the rest of the world. Africa and Asia started Participating at WC since 1978 with only one team each. Southgate has been computing with the world playing true and justified football in front of the world. That makes him the best Coach ever.

As far as some "pundits" are concerned, England can lose 0-5 to Spain on Sunday and these media people or ex-players will still praise Southgate as the best manager England has ever had simply because he took England to 2 consecutive Euro Finals. Southgate is already a god and can do no wrong in these people's (the FA included) eyes. Remaining trophy-less is not going to diminish his deity status. These pundits and ex-players are going to call for knighthood for him regardless of Sunday's performance and result.
On the other hand, for supporters who want nothing less than an England trophy, keeping Southgate beyond this Euro will be an absolute disaster.
