This is my non-spoiler review for Malice which is the first in the Faithful and the Fallen series by John Gwynne. It's his fantasy debut and although there's a lot of troupes, it's a really good book...

Wonderful books. What i like a lot about this serie is that it combines classic fantasy tropes with the more modern kind of "historic" like, gritty, fantasy writters. Second book was even better having a massively epic climactic finale. Right now i am reading the third book and its also as good as I expected it to be

This sounds good, I'll look into this once I've finished some of the current series I'm working through. Good review.

I love the way you say Christian, haha.  When it comes to fantasy tropes, it really is how well the book is written, I agree with you.  I am slightly more forgiving than most fantasy readers about tropes, just because I need to read more fantasy books.  I want to read all those tropey books from the 80s still.  Maybe once I have read all of them, it will turn me off, but I'm not to that point yet.  Glad you liked this one.  I picked this up at a library sale last year and I'm glad I did.

It takes subtle cues from Norse mythology, not Christianity.
