Malice Book Review (Faithful & the Fallen #1)

My name is Alex and these are my thoughts and opinions on book 1 of the Faithful and the Fallen series, Malice by John Gwynne. I hope you all enjoy this review for Malice!

Veradis is the newest member of the warband for the High Prince, Nathair. He is one of the most skilled swordsman to come out of his homeland, yet he is always under the shadow of his older brother.

Nathair has ideas - and a lot of plans. Many of them don't involve his father, the High King Aquilus. Nor does he agree with his father's idea to summon his fellow kings to council.

The Banished Lands has a violent past where armies of men and giants clashed in battle, the earth running dark with their heartsblood. Now, the stones weep red and giant wyrms stir, and those who can still read the signs see a danger far worse than all that has come before...

I just finished Malice yesterday. I struggled with the start of it, because I stupidly started it the night before I went away for a big event (when no reading was going to happen). I picked up the audiobook version and did a combo of audio and kindle, and that was an awesome way to read this. I love how Gwynne makes you so invested in the characters...and then they’re gone. That last 1/3 of the book, oh my God. Great action packed ending. I can’t wait to start Valor.

I believe we have a lot of similar tastes in books by looking at that bookshelf haha. I agreed with pretty much all of the review, I really think the characters have brought this series to the forefront for me and am really excited to see where this goes from here! Great video!

Just finished Malice and it might be my favorite first book in a series ever, and if it is really is the “weakest” of the series like most people seem to agree on then I can see the Faithful and the Fallen easily being one of my favorite series of all time! I loved everything about it!

I was ~30% done with the audiobook and I was feeling lost (there are so many B & V characters! And so many kingdoms and so many other fantasy nouns they all started to blend). It took slightly longer to read this but I switched to just reading and took some notes on my phone with each chapter. I understand EVERYTHING and ultimately enjoyed the book much more for it. Fingers crossed 0 new characters are introduced and it's just everyone from the first book for the rest of the series.

Hard no for Malice, just an escalating stream of tropes!
When Corben saves the 'wolven' cub??? Really??? Can we get a red wedding? Just a bland sameness throughout sprinkled with insulting tropes to get you really pissed!🤬
