Notes:
In 2023 the USMC is transitioning from crunches to the plank. In the video, you saw the majority of Marines going for the plank in which they hit 3:45 (maximum score).

The studs running sub 6 min mile for three miles were extremely humble, didn't even want the recognition, went back and ran with him to motivate him. You can tell that's the characters of exemplary Marines!

I recently ran a PFT just to see how well I could do it. Using the PFT standards of my day, which is what I'm most familiar with, I got 18 pullups, MAX'd the situps (80 within 2 min), and finished the 3 mile run in under 24 min (about 23:45 or so). No, I'm not a PFT stud any more, but considering I'll be 59 this September, I'm still happy I can keep in relatively good shape without injuring myself.

The PFT is brutal, especially if you don’t train for it. He did good for doing it without prepping and being his size

I'm not surprised that you struggled bro. I was in the Marines and I went through enlisted training (2011-2015) and went back for OCS in 2021 but got hurt. The training for Marines is wildly different. I had to cut out all powerlifting and focus all body weight stuff. Ran 60 miles a month, 1100 pullups a month and 2000 crunches a month at least.

Y’all this is already hard enough and people don’t realize it’s a lot harder for someone with more muscle weight like Austen!! Great job!!😎

Now do it with the following conditions: no prep
Drink a handle the night before
Smoke a pack a day for a month leading up to it
Chow hall food for a month leading up
Do the whole thing with a dip in
That’s the Marine way

Totally fun watching all of these Austen. I know I am late to the party but the PFT without prep is hard especially when you are a bigger guy. As officers it was pretty much a given that you had to do max pullups and situps. I always suffered a bit on the run, but honestly didn't train for it as I hated running. I did a ton of pullups and situps though. It was old school in those days as we were still allowed to kip, which we did for the test to save energy, but not workouts. Also situps were hands behind head so not as ergonomically safe. I typically struggled on the runs, my fastest time at OCS at 19:12 (still remember that 35 years later....lol). Normally in the 21 to 22 range, still good enough for upper 270's, lower 280's. Worst PFT ever was around the flight deck of a ship underway. Inside leg was hurting big time and shin splints were terrible. Nice job highlighting what our service members do. They truly are the best of us....

Marines are built different, I dreaded the PFT every single year, but you have to do what it takes to be part of the brotherhood, Semper Fi.

77-07, maintained a 285 score for 30 years. Maxed 2 events easily. Run time average was 19:15 - 20:00 minutes. Seeing this video brought back some good memories. Thanks again for sharing.

One of the first things I learned from joining the forces was that all the extra meathead muscle mass I put on during highschool was nothing but aesthetic padding. Lean and effective gets the job done.

Just enlisted in the Marines, and I gotta say it is so cool to be a part of this program. Can't wait to earn the title.

Did my first PFT at Parris Island in 1977 right out of high school. Back than to get a perfect score you had to do 20 pull ups, 80 sit ups in two minutes (not crunches) and run the 3 miles in 18 minutes. Was in 3rd Battalion at Parris Island and we had to run in sand with combat boots. I maxed my pull ups and sit ups and ran my best time ever of 21 minutes and ten seconds. My chest hurt so bad I thought my heart was going to burst. After I graduated boot camp I went to 2nd Combat Engineers 2nd Marine Div at Camp Lejeune 1978-1982. Had a Marine transfer to our unit after he served four years in 2nd Recon Battalion who ran a PFT with my unit. That's when I got to see what a specially trained Marine could do. Not only did he dust us all, he did it with half the effort. Must admit watching this video brought back good memories.
