Official hymn of the United States Marine Corps

The "Marines' Hymn" is the official hymn of the United States Marine Corps, introduced by the first Director of USMC Band, Francesco Maria Scala. It is the oldest official song in the United States Armed Forces. The "Marines' Hymn" is typically sung at the position of attention as a gesture of respect. However, the third verse is also used as a toast during formal events, such as the birthday ball and other ceremonies. Western Illinois University uses the hymn prior to all football games. They are the only non-military academy allowed to use the hymn. The university has had permission to use the official nickname, mascot, and hymn of the Corps since 1927.

"Today you people are no longer maggots. Today you are Marines. You're part of a brotherhood. From now on, until the day you die, wherever you are, every Marine is your brother. Most of you will go to Vietnam. Some of you will not come back. But always remember this: Marines die, that's what we're here for! But the Marine Corps lives forever, and that means you live forever!"

- Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey

My grandfather was a marine from 43-73, three times awarded the distinguished flying cross. he made it through WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. Had he not come home, I wouldn’t be here typing this today. Semper Fi, Marines. You do your country proud.

Still sends chills up my spine. Been out of the Marines for 32 years now. Still stirs me up.

“They fought liked devils, they howled like wolves in the night. They make us stay up late, too scared to sleep. It seems that satan has unleashed his devil dogs into us. It’s only a matter of time until they come to fetch our souls.” ~ German Officer, 1918.

My dad was a U.S marine for 27 years who fought in the Iraqi war and was never hit with a bullet once. He was in the 2nd battalion and was a Colonel. He worked with Navy SEALs and other marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. When I'm older I wish to join the Marines to be like my Dad and Grandfather.

How do we know the Marines are badass? The Army and Navy advertises themselves with all the benefits they offer. The Marines advertise by pointing out that by joining, you get to be a Marine.

“When you’re working with Army and Marine Corps units, you immediately notice a difference. The Army is pretty tough, but their performance can depend on the individual unit. Some are excellent, filled with hoorah and first-class warriors. A few are absolutely horrible; most are somewhere in between. In my experience, Marines are gung ho no matter what. They will all fight to the death. Every one of them just wants to get out there and kill. They are bad-ass, hard-charging mothers.”

― Chris Kyle, NAVY SEAL, American Sniper

My late father was wounded trying to save a Marine at Iwo Jima. He always said that at Iwo Jima. He never saw such courage as the Marines demonstrated. He told us children to always honor and respect the Marines.

Big thanks to the people at USMC who secure the airport in Kabul. You gave your life for our safety. Rest in peace. Greetings from Germany.

Freedom isn't free, but the US Marine Corps will pay most of your share.

Remember devildogs

We stole the eagle from the Air Force, the rope from the Army, and the anchor from the Navy. And on the 7th Day, when God rested, we overran His perimeter, stole the globe, and we’ve been running the show ever since. Warrior by day, lover by night, drunkard by choice, Marine by God.

My brother graduates boot camp in 4 days and he has no idea that me, our older sister, and our grandpa will be accompanying my mom to his graduation! I've been repeating this song while cleaning his room up for him for the passed hour so I can sing it at the ceremony with everyone else. It's gonna be my first plane ride, and I bet it'll be so fun when I get there! It's gonna be great! He's platoon leader too, so that's also amazing!

Honoring my husband, John M. Hopkins, who fought in Viet Nam as part of the 3rd Recon Battalion. He was awarded a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts. He is interred at Willamette National Cemetery, where I visit him often. When I do, I play this hymn for him. Semper Fi, my love. 💜

My 21 year old son went to Camp Pendleton today, September 11, 2023. I wanted him to go, but it has made me so terribly sad. I hope he's a better person after basic, but I do hope these 13 weeks go by very fast. Best to all the young men and women that have taken this path.
