The painful truth of it all is that origin is too home hitting for americans who grew up past a certain time period

i actually love this backstory. it’s incredibly relatable for most americans, it hits really close to home for our vision of a “broken society.” a random robbery doesn’t evoke the same feeling of social helplessness, of a decaying social system, nearly as well as a mass shooting does. even in real life. it’s also so much more anonymous, so much more general. originally, bruce was basically the main victim. but now he’s just another face in this crowd of huddling kids, and he looks around and promises to protect people from the feeling he sees there.

it also feels a lot more justified for him to hate guns here. not that it NEEDS super overt justification, his parents were killed by a gun, i get that. but this makes it feel so much more real politically. i guess it just speaks to our contemporary anxieties, and to what we really view as a hero in the 21st century. hard to fit a billionaire into that picture.
