This is one of the better cost analysis I've seen. However, as a 2005 SR22 owner, I can tell you it's on the low side. First, very few owners fly 185 hours / year. The average is more like 100 or less. This bumps the hourly cost way up. Also, maintenance and annual are higher. I budget $8K for annuals and related, but it has gone higher. Also, the overhaul costs are more like $60K, and keep in mind the prop overhaul. Finally...and you mentioned this...in CA we have .0125% property tax. For my plane, that's around $2, 500. Add that all up, and you're really around $500 / hour...and that's without depreciation. Perhaps hourly is the wrong way to think of it though. What's the value of all the time you spend meeting other pilots, hanging out at the airport, etc? The ownership experience is way more expensive than folks think, but the value...or me anyway...is there. $500/hour for an older Cirrus at 100 Hours per year, give or take $50 is about right.

My friend owns a plane (I don't, I'm a renter). He once told me that whenever it undergoes maintenance and repairs, his A&P prepares two invoices, each for 50% of the total cost. He shows one to his wife.

You fixed costs are way too high. The SR22 annual is around $2500. The parachute repacking is not a cost unless you see the 10 year anniversary. And those prices can be lower if you shop. Not everyone hangars, some tie down. Own the hangar and get appreciation, instead of costs. Oil is $400 annually (includes a shop doing the oil change). Fuel cost per hour based on $5 a gallon is $75 (assume 15gph). No engine overhaul will be seen my most owners unless you own a ten plus year plane. Use Garmin plates and get discounts on Garmin Pilot. Both costs are far below Jeppesen and Foreflight. Nexrad weather is part of ADS-B (free). COPA is to be avoided. Join AOPA and talk to Cirrus directly when you have issues. SAAVY is also not needed. Just find a good shop you will use regularly and they will cut you breaks on everything. In general, you can cut all your cost estimates in half and still be in the game.

That was great information. Can you also post same type of videos for the diamond DA 62 and the DA 42VI as well..it would be a great help. Also please include how much would be the financing costs for both.🙂👍

I have owned a variety of airplanes, singles and light twins, from 1980 to the present. It may just the area I live in but I have never had to pay anything close to what people are paying for a Cirrus SR22. The SR22 is a beautiful airplane but you can keep them if this is what they cost. My 310 has good performance and lots more room. I burn about 23 gallons an hour for 180K cruise. My second engine is much cheaper to have than the parachute.

These are obviously "California prices". You should have titled it, the cost of ownership in California/west Coast. Come to the rural areas of the Midwest. Pay about 1/8th the cost of a reasonably priced used plane and 1/16th for the rest. Have your own hanger, fly out of your back yard. Yearly property tax on your plane sounds like the state of Tax-iforna to me. If you dont have your plane paid off. Then there is insurance needed. So pay it off. Just get basic liability.

Thanks for making this video. Just a small constructive criticism is after you took the tone to lay out all the elements to consider, you rushed through the last slide without any comment. So comment in comparison to other competitive aircraft would have gone well to sealing the deal of the value proposition the SR22 is in light of the laid out costs.

I've seen way too many, "Just buy your own plane videos, " I think, because these numbers are sobering.

I realize there are some variables here that may change, but it's a good basis from which to make a decision. Thanks for the effort.

What about aquistion cost/monthly loan payment?

do you have any data points on leaseback? I know that this is a common practice for owners to defray some of the operating costs.

No mention of FREE Weather? ADS-B? I've been using ADS-B for 8 years now, exclusively. I fly hard-IFR and a lot of cross country in the Northeast. Never looked back at XM.

How many hours annually did you calculate to get to your $239 per hour number?

This video is extremely screwed, guys. The fixed costs are way too high and this doesn't even include the price of the already overpriced plane. Owing a decent 20-30 year old plane that will meet almost all your needs can cost you no more than a typical Honda Civic. It's extremely feasible to own a plane and even better if you have a partner to go in with you. I would highly suggest you keep watching other aircraft ownership videos.
