Gotta admit They traded up big time. Jennifer Connolly is one of the most beautiful women that ever lived.

And her character was mentioned in the first movie too. Penny Benjamin.

As much as Maverick and Charlie has that fiery chemistry in the first film but you can tell there’s a lot more to Maverick and Penny given their relationships dates way back before events of the original Top Gun. Charlie and Maverick was kinda more like a fling whereas with Penny it's more than just two former lovers making up. Penny understands a lot about Maverick on a much deeper and personal level which is why she called him by his first name as well as being his moral support.
