Chiyo (Ziyi Zhang) is learning how to become a Geisha under the wing of Mameha (Michelle Yeho).

What’s the Memoirs of a Geisha movie about?
In 1929, a young girl from a poor fishing village in Japan, Chiyo (Suzuka Ohgo), and her sister Satsu (Samantha Futerman) are sold by their father to the owner of a geisha house. They are quickly separated and Chiyo finds herself confronted with the strictness of the housekeeper and the harshness of the life of an apprentice geisha. She also has to face the jealousy-ridden hostility of Hatsumomo (Gong Li), the star geisha of the house, who succeeds in relegating her to the status of a simple servant. Chiyo has lost all hope when she is suddenly seduced by the kindness of a man (Ken Watanabe), chairman of an electricity company, with whom she falls in love. She then decides to do everything she can to deserve his attention. Another geisha, Mameha (Michelle Yeho), takes her under her wing and begins to teach her the rudiments of the trade by becoming her "big sister". Thanks to Mameha and helped by her determination, she soon becomes, under the name Sayuri (Zhang Ziyi), a famous and admired geisha throughout Hanamachi. But success does not bring her closer to the one she secretly loves because a geisha no longer has the right to love. Moreover, Nobu (Kōji Yakusho), the president's close friend, is interested in Sayuri and interposes himself between them. It will take the Japanese rout of World War II and the end of age-old traditions for Sayuri and the president to finally be together.

I know Michelle Yeoh because she is a good friend of my mother in law, and once she told me that when they did this scene she was furious at the director and the staff because on chicken got killed and the other got a broken leg.
She demanded that the one with the broken leg was taken to a veterinarian and that the dead one was cooked and eaten by the staff. She said that if they didn't conform to her request she would leave the set right there and then and would not return.
Michelle Yeoh is vegetarian but she said that she has often been invited to restaurants by people who don't know she is and always ate whatever meat was served to her with tears in her heart, because the worse thing than eating what she was served would be to refuse it and risking having it thrown away. Then the animal would have really died for nothing.
I already liked her but the day she told me that, she became my hero.

0:55 I only just realised how their clothes, while they walk, mimic the fish tails in the fish bowl. Amazing

The title says 'transformation into a Geisha.' Ironically in this clip, Ichiyo/Sayuri (ZiYi Zhang) is not yet a Geisha, but a 'Maiko.' Her make ups, her accessories & the kimono she wore; were all in Maiko style. Geishas don't wear that much of make ups & accessories and a Geisha's kimono is very different.
P/S; Maiko is a term for the apprentice of a Geiko/Geisha.

What's sad about Hollywood is when they cast foreign actors they keep casting the same actor again and again and again for everything. It's like there were no other asian women alive in the industry during that 4-5 year period. These 2 and Ken Watanabe were literally in all movies where an asian was needed. It got boring. It's so lazy and narrowminded.

I watched this movie as a kid, and even then I remember feeling so sad for her and for every woman in the movie.... what a limited life... to me this was never a pretty film, it was always tragic

I absolutely loved the book, memoirs of a geisha. I loved it so much I looked more into the history and found out that the the author did not respect the original story. I then read quickly, The Geisha of Gion, by Mineko Iwasaki-by whom this story was based off of. I loved her story even more. Please give it a go if you liked this story.

They really took some liberties to make geisha look more westernized because its clear the costume designers and director valued aesthetic over accuracy.
I'm aware they toned down a lot of how a maiko and geisha really appear due to thinking it would scare western audiences but this entire film and the portrayal of geisha during that time period is such a drastic oversight filled with unnecessary melodrama under the guise of this being a memoir when it is a man who made up things about a real geisha to sensationalize the profession he failed to understand.

One of the many beautiful scenes in this movie. And this movie is basically made up of every possible beautiful scene you can think of

I almost forgot... can we get a shout out for young Sazuka Ohgo, who played Chiyo with incredible charm? What a beautiful little girl she was in this. You just want to gather her up and adopt her.

As someone who have watched this for the first time, I am stunned by her beauty, and also for the build up of her clips of slowly dressing to become a geisha is just so impactful + the music

I can't understand why they couldn't find a real Japanese actress to play these roles lol.

Remember: MoaG is a work of fiction.
Sayuri and all of the characters are made up, Golden did this so that if he had a slip up or failed to understand something culture wise, the fiction part comes into play.
He admitted to filling in details and making things up and went as far to say that he did not use Mineko as a direct source only inspiration.
I personally think he may have used Sayo Masuda's story as the real inspiration for Sayuri and her geisha sister as Pumpkin but didn't credit Sayo. There are more parallels with moag and Sayo's autobiography than there are with Mineko Iwasaki.
Sayo, was not a famous geisha in Kyoto so her story didnt have the draw I suppose. She was an average onsen geisha in Suwa, Nagano, Japan pre WWII and she had very little positives in her life; Mineko was the complete opposite. Iwasaki was near royalty even before her tenure ship as a geiko began and she belonged to a higher class hanamachi unlike Sayo.

I do not think Golden ever intended to tell an accurate account of Mineko's life which is where I think the problems arose. She likely assumed he was wanting to know about her life and experiences in details but in reality he had a predetermined idea of the narrative of his story.
- He also had Liza Dalby's expertise, but did little to use her knowledge appropriately or because moag is a work of fiction maybe he felt he could get away with more. Golden has stated in the past that his book is accurate but the characters are made up but we know that his book and accounts are not accurate because he cannot know what life in Kyoto was like pre WWII. I think much of what he fails to understand or relate on paper was simply lost in translation. He writes the entire story with an overtly negative tone, which I think is his overall view of the geisha as a whole. Otherwise, I feel he would approach it in a neutral matter of fact way in the way that Liza Dalby does in her book Geisha.
