Memoirs of a Geisha- Hatsumomo's introducton

A moment of sensuality, Hatsumomo makes her entrance.

Without realizing what is happening to them, Chiyo's very ill parents send the sisters to a okiya with the hopes of providing them a home and a life they no longer could. At this moment Chiyo sees her future nemesis.

Noted Chinese actress Gong Li plays the fiery Hatsumono. This role was a little unusual for her as Gong Li normally doesn't play the heavy. Several of her films in part or in whole are posted on YouTube. Look for Raise The Red Lantern and To Live, both excellent films.

The striking of the flint was for good fortune.

This clip remains at the pleasure of Sony Pictures.

Gong Li is gorgeous. She has a regal presence no matter what.

Hatsumomo in the book is rather MUCH more appalling than in the movie, the movie made her out to be a little more nicer but in the book, she's a real B. There's many things that she does and how her lies come back at her. Please read the book, its SO MUCH MORE.

Hard to believe Gong Li was 40 when she did this movie. She looked 24 tops and very beautiful.

This scene and the scene where she walks away after the fire was so breathtaking and memorable. So memorable that it was the only scene which I remembered after so many years. Gong li ~~~

OMG I realized the actress who plays the sister is the girl who found her separated twin on Facebook. I saw their documentary It was incredible

Hatsumomo is my favourite character in the movie, what a complex portrayal by Gong Li and to me she looks a lot more stunning, regal and exquisite than Zhang Ziyi in the movie so its a little hard to believe those scenes where men are falling for Zhang's character ... I mean hello, look at that great stunning beauty Hatsumomo you've got over there, ...

I saw a comparation post between the movie's Hatsumomo and the book's, and it said while both of them were beautiful, the book's one was like a porcelain doll, all tiny, adorned and perfect; while the movie one was like a goddes, more sensual, natural, stonger... I think that descriptin fits perfectly to Gong Li's dark complex performance!

Pd. I ALWAYS, every goddamn time I see the line "This one maybe, the other one no" get impressed of how cold-blooded, cold-minded and heartless this hole preparing geisha thing was, at least the one in this movie.

Another amazing casting even though Hatsumomo is described as a tiny woman in the book. Gong Li is GORGEOUS!

I wish they had Li say "when I see garbage I cross the street" when she first sees Chiyo - just to bring people back to earth.

I wish they had Hatsumomo's line about Chiyo being trash! It was such a great intro in the book.

She was nice in this scene compared to the book lol, in the book, hatsumomo smiles at chiyo in a Regina George, predator-kinda way and then calls
her trash, she later slaps Chiyo too.

In the Book Hatsumomo was not a tall regal women like gone lee. She was described as being small and doll like in appearance and in the book 100 times more devious and viciousness and vain. Her innocent doll like appearance masked the nastiness and rot of her personality which makes her in the book all the more frightening. In the end afer she leaves/thrown out of the geisha house it is said she Fell into prostution and drank herself to death . A sad fucked up end but perhaps deserving, but in the book we even have to start to question wether Sieurie is as sugar and spice as she seems as she the story teller seems to tell lies and put her own spin on things herself so one has to wonder if sieurie was any better than they were.
