Memoirs of a Geishia- Japan changes

This scene caused a bit of controversy.

The war is now over. The United States started occupying Japan in part to demilitarize the society but also to help keep the country stable.
The economy was exhausted by the war with both jobs and money in short supply.

The American soldiers had no where to go but had money to spend and the Japanese had no money but a place to go. The local population made an effort to accommodate American tastes and earn a living doing it. The Japanese prewar were starting to enjoy aspects of western culture and post war, that process accelerated. The old Japan was fading away.

This clip remains at the pleasure of Sony Pictures.

I know this movie is a tale about the hardships of a geisha girl and a lot of people who analyze the movie are like: 'it's all about facades and cunning artistic manipulators.'. However, when I look at this movie, I see it as a glimpse into a culture that was slowly tainted and destroyed and how negatively it affected those a part of it. And it's kind of sad. Being a geisha, though not easy and not always a great life, was a very traditional style and it took time to do well. And after ww2, it was treated with disrespect. It's kind of sad, really.

Anyone else agree with me?

Pumpkin's change reflects Japan's change

Mamera is truly the MVP. I know the Chairman payed her to take in Sayuri but she truly cared for her and really was a role model for her.

I loved this part of the film. The Japanese version of Gone with the Wind. A gracious world destroyed by war. Even though we know both the Antebellum South and Imperial Japan represented the suffering of millions, and their rhetoric and ideologies should never came back again, we can’t help but empathize with the naive, innocent civilians of those nations who fell into despair and challenged such tumultuous times.

This movie perfectly showed the changes Japan was going through.

Pumpkin's transition into someone jaded and cynical is so sad

I always loved this scene because the shift between pre-surrender and post-surrender Japan is so drastic. It's like a full 360.

One thing about this movie that I loved was how they could say so much with facial expression and simple gestures. Michelle Yeoh was especially talented in this area. 1:38 Her words said "How?". But the expression said "Get real."😏.

Pumpkin did Not forgive her in the least!  What do you expect with Hatsumomo as her teacher?

This andrews sisters song fits so good in this scene, the song is about the language barriers which happened in the post war era in germany and japan between the US soldiers and the local women

Americans really did act obnoxious when they went to foreign countries during the war.

You can hear a bit of Pumpkin's American actress slipping in and out. Her actress was from America and had to re-learn how to speak with a Japanese accent for the role.

The fact that Pumpkin was still mad after she apologized here was still messed up.

I think this scene does show that Mameha had some small amount of affection for the Baron (not that he deserved it).

If the war had not come along at the time it did, things may have improved between Pumpkin and Sayuri. Even it Sayuti took the place that was promised to Pumpkin, Hatsumono was out of the way. Sayuri could have done a lot for Pumpkins career, had the war not struck.

I must say after the slightly inaccurate hair/dress styles in the first half of the film, the second half actually looks more genuine

Watching her friend betray her when she straight up asked for her forgiveness was just sad.. that's how you know she was never your friend.
