In the book and the movie, Mameha went above and beyond to help Chiyo. In part it was because the Chairman asked her too. She had to rise to the occasion because Hatsumomo was going to oppose her every step of the way.

Man they really played fast and loose with the deal they made here. In no way or form did Mameha offer to pay for Chiyo's school and expenses. In fact, in the original deal, mother is still paying Mameha.

Mameha would normally take a big cut of Chiyo's earnings for training her, but she offered to take half wages unless Chiyo repaid her debt by age 20. Then she'd get double, and backpay.
