Memoirs of a Geisha- Sayuri's debut

A moment of sensuality.

Chiyo is now a maiko and has her debut. Her antagonist Hatsumomo stops by to observe and undermine her.

Zhang Ziyi plays the older Chiyo (now known as Sayuri). Zhang started her career as a dancer and her skills well serve her in Memoirs.

This clip remains at the pleasure of Sony Pictures.

I loved this scene, although there were MANY favorite scenes for me in this movie. In fact I loved when Hatsumomo shades Sayuri after her debut dance saying "I was once a maiko myself once", to which Sayuri agrees commenting "it's been such a very time."

Think some desperate producer will ever create a new reality show "become a Geisha" or something in that line? Give them time, they will.

This is not normally how maiko dance. They dance slower than this..

Does anyone know the name of the piece of music being played on the shamisen? I know it wasn’t composed just for the film because I’ve heard it before in a few videos of geisha dance performances. In the videos I’ve seen they play it as the curtain is going up before the performance actually starts.

As a person who has completed in English Literature degree at University (one cannot get a job doing that degree, I know), I find pleasure in seeing various forms of art and deconstructing its meaning to understand it to a greater degree. I'd love to know what the story here is with this dance and what its subtle meanings of its distinct art form indicate about its storytelling.

0:00: Now, i can also do this kind of "Open yourself fan" 😯😯😊😊

0:09: I can only do that move with the kind of fans the Japanese usually give to tourists 😯😯😊😊

She is beautiful, but her make-up and hair-style are not like maiko or geisha.
She turns folding-fan s like Chinese-Acrobat-dancer, it`s not the way of Japanese classical dancing.
It`s very, very annoying.
It`s like when you see an beautiful blond dancer in a tutu, doing fine Pirouette, although her role is a Flamenco dancer.
Why did movie director let the actress be traind Japanese dancing, or hire a stylist and make-up artist, who can transfigure the actress into maiko or geisha?

I’m Japanese.
This movie is so disgusting.
This is not Japanese culture at all.

The way of wearing the kimono is different, and these hairstyles are so disturbed.
You should not watch this movie.

Sorry for my poor English
