What Is Dissociation?

Показать описание

Dissociation is how your mind copes with too much stress, such as a traumatic event that has happened in your life.

Dissociation is when you experience a disconnection from yourself and the world around you.

Dissociation is a natural response to trauma for many people that they can't control or have no control of.

Some people choose to dissociate as a way of focusing or calming down.

Some people experience dissociation as a symptom of their mental health condition (for example Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD etc)

Dissociation can be experienced in different ways such as;

Dissociative amnesia

You have gaps in your life where you can't remember anything that has happened.

You can’t remember information about yourself or about things that happened in your life.

Dissociative fugue

Travelling to a different location and taking on a new identity for a short time without remembering your identity

Derealisation

You see the world as 'lifeless' or 'foggy’.

You see objects changing in shape, size or colour.

You feel like other people are robots even though you know they are not.

You feel the world around you isn’t real.

Identify confusion

You feel like there are many different people inside you.

You find it difficult to define what kind of person you are.

Depersonalisation

You feel as if you are floating away.

You feel disconnected from parts of your body or your emotions.

You feel as if you are just observing your emotions.

Identity alteration

You speak in a different voice or voices.

You use a different name or names.

You feel as if you are losing control to someone else.

You act like different people, including children

I can't even begin to explain how happy I am right now after watching this video. I thought i was the only one who experienced these things (my whole life) and I could never explain it. I'm going to show this video to my mom.

Sometimes it feels like I take a step back from controlling my body. I’m going to describe it with a metaphor. Pretend like you’re a pilot and you’re controlling the plane. It feels like I’m taking a few steps back from the wheel and the automatic pilot takes over. I am less aware of my surroundings and getting lost in my thoughts. Is this dissociating?

Watching this confirms my suspicions that I dissociate. I think I’m going through a depersonalisationative dissociation right now. I’ll check the link in the description.

I learned about this online a bit ago and now that plus this video makes me think I do dissociate.

Thanks for the information on disassociation. I've actually seen some of my friends do this before.

If you watch this video and think you do dissociate, everyone naturally does this, but levels actually vary.
Most people dissociate by means of daydreaming (most often the ones willing to dissociate) and those are just the mild levels.
The average one are to those with general anxiety, dissociating is something really important to their mental health to control their strong responses.
Then there's these with post traumatic stress disorders, flashbacks are considered as dissociation because the brain's only focused on the memory and not in the reality that time. People with PTSD or CPTSD might often experience derealization, and depersonalization more commonly for those with CPTSD, and even identity alterations.
Then there's Dissociative Identity Disorder, which can experience most if not all types of derealization, mainly identity alterations and dissociative amnesia. DID is far more than just you feeling plunged out of your body or just forgetting something, though. This is when each of the identities the brain has addressed are actually parts of a supposed single personality holds pieces of one repeated childhood trauma (but not all alters though), and because of that sever trauma the brain had also learned how to dissociate in every way to keep the mind intact.

At 0:42 where it says some people choose do dissociate, does it mean anyone can do it? If so how?

Just a possible tip- this music makes it extremely hard to read focus n understand what I’m trying to look at so I have to turn the volume down but me thinks I won’t be staying in this channel cuz that gets annoying 🥴

i think i might have de realization at times (not self diagnosing or anything) but at times i just stop everything and i don’t know how to explain it but it’s like everything is black and i’m floating in darkness and nothing is real?

For me the mismatch between the topic and the upbeat music just ruined the video.
