Me and my sister (who also plays Minecraft) were really excited when this update came out, so when we found an ancient city we quickly started exploring and experimenting, we did research in our free time and explored, trying to find out how to light the portal, later though, we discovered that there were unfinished strongholds in the Ancient cities, that contained the Goat horn. We quickly realised that they were actually pillagers that built the ancient cities .

The warden was once peaceful and lived with the villagers and ancient buildings there is art from mojang showing a clean warden made of stone

My theory is that the warden was the guardian, and they were fighting the zombie infection, and when the last of the intelligent villagers finished the portal the first villager to go inside became a dismorphed plague that gradually infected everything and all the vollagers turned into corrupted zombies and over time they became sculk, sensors, and the shrieker snd the infected zombies made their skin decay and they became skeletons

I actually believe that they were once the guardians of an ancient underground city. They look the way they do since caves are dark so then over the years the people who lived down there developed a keen sense of smell and the sight sense got degraded as it wouldn’t be needed as much in such a dark place. We know that when a creature does on skulk, it spreads. So that makes me think that there might’ve been a war where all of the civilization died or fled and left the wardens as guards incase they ever returned or to keep the remnants of the thriving city protected and safe.

Inside of the chests, you can find echo shards and a music disk crafted from some other shards. I think that the echo shards are the dreams and wishes of the past civilizations and the dreams have turned into a echo fading away after the death of the city

This is my theory:

The ancient builders built the ancient city to protect them from something (that's why it is underground) and lived with the skulk. The warden was their protector and the ancient builders built a statue of the warden in it's honour (Which is the portal like structure in the middle of the ancient city). They tested the skulk's capabilities and used it to warn their protector (being blind) to enemies of the city(that's why there are testing rooms under the city and skulk sensors and skulk shriekers scattered around the city).

Though somewhere down the line, the skulk started to infect the walls and the ground of the city and the ancient builders were forced to leave(that's why there is skulk on the walls, all over the ground). In the city's infected state, the pillagers arrived, though the warden remained present in the city and was warned of the pillager's arrival by the skulk sensors.

The pillager's built over the city, and stashed loot in the city (that is why there are dark oak structures scattered around the city), though it wasn't long before the warden made them meet their demise.

The warden continued to protect the city to this day, though not having people to protect.

I feel like the warden would have also may have no eyes due to the deep dark being too dark to see so it adapted to hearing.

The portal in the center was created and used by the ancient builders, but unlike the nether or end portals, it had a one time use. You had to use a rare mineral to open it and once it was open, the essence of the dimension that awaited leaked into the overworld. The people were shocked, and wanted to research it further, but the portal closed before they could go in. …and the rare mineral no longer exists. They continued experiments on the skulk but every time an ancient builder dies, they disappear the next day as the skulk grows larger. Overtime, the bones and souls trapped in the skulk manifest into a hideous creature… the warden. Extremely sensitive to sounds, it kills off the population living in the cities and destroys them, leaving their bones and souls to be stuck in the ground, lying dormant for until another poor adventurer decided to activate the shreikers…

Maybe the warden is stuck in the overworld, that's why they spread his territory.

I always think the warden and sculk is some type of advanced parasitic fungus, that has took over a body and used it to move and protect itself.

The ancient portal was made by the ancient builders and the ancient portal is the home of the wardens so that means that the ancient portal is another dimension so if we wait until for the 1.21 update then we might be able to make all the wardens go home and visit the dimension

Theory (axolotl theory not from me but the rest is)
The warden was a axolotl but sadly had to eat his own kin and over time he mutated into the warden, at first he was friendly but then the ancient builders forced him to guard the ancient city and due to him living there for many centuries he started to become part of the sculk that had spread from the portal

My theory is that wardens are Just iron golems.they found a portal. They did go through. In that dimension was only sculk. The iron golems was being corrupted by sculk.the wardens go back in the portal.now there in a cave. They loved that dimension so much they made a fortress with sculk.

I believe that the warden is a fungi/parasite since it is alive and it can infect other objects and root the parasite same way how mold roots as it develops

Its a fungus cause it grows from a vine to a block to a catalyst to a shreeker and as you said its from another dimension

Fun fact:the sulk you stepping on are the body of warden and most likely there was an people down there they discovered new dimensions but the warden broke out and sulk are the people who die
