I'm trying to wrap my head around this...and this is a genuine question...I've been posting artwork to my IG for roughly 7 years...paintings, drawings, time lapse videos, process shots, hand lettering, calligraffiti, design work, and on and on...indeed, in a way, acting as an online "portfolio"(along with two websites as true online portfolios), yet, this isn't enough? To my mind, all of the things I listed ARE the value. I've been an illustrator, painter and designer for many, many years. That's what I show on my page. But you're saying that the work itself is not enough, and that I need to be bringing some OTHER value...?
To be clear, in 2021 I understand one needs to evolve to keep up with the ever changing algorithm of having an online presence as an artist(and anyone else) in order to be successful. That being said, the thought of having to now become a teacher(?), inspirer(?), some sort of online personality(?), rubs against every fiber of my being. And because if this, I wouldn't even know where to start. What am I missing?

At this moment in my life, I agree with Chris. I often scroll through the art and design side of Instagram and I come across profiles that only show their work/portfolio. After looking at those types of profile for awhile everyone starts to look the same because it lacks the personality of the artists. Sometimes I just think these account are run by bots trying to exploit the algorithm.

It's Instagram, I want to see social media stuff. Like do you have any other hobbies? Have you done any artwork or design of things just for fun? What's a good restaurant to eat that have good food or a nice interior design that inspires your work? Social media should be more casual. Showcase your work, but don't be too restrictive.

The portfolio stuff should be reserve to your own webpage or Behance, where you can dive deep into the project with case studies and what not.

Disagree. I hate scrolling through Instagram seeing all these noob designers trying to educate everyone like they’re experts. Here’s the formula: clickbait title + over the top stock photos + wasting 4 slides getting to the point + at-home portrait photo in shitty lighting plugging your own account. And honestly I’d rather long into Instagram and see what amazing projects you’re (Chris & team) are working on. Personally, idgaf about followers and like to use Instagram as a quick way to showcase my work.

I remember hearing Chris say this or something similar a while back. It got me thinking hard because my IG was only used for my work as a logo designer.

Fast forward now, I now post things I’ve learnt over the years on branding and people are actually asking me when I’m going to bring out my next post. Chris is spot on here, people care more from the value you provide than the pretty designs you make. Glad I made the switch.

“Add value” is the hidden gem in this. While this isn’t new advice for some, either way it is still honestly one of the most powerful pieces of advice I have ever heard.

It’s more about your character than your work. Your work will speak for itself but we always need to remember…

They buy you and never your work.

I hate that Instagram has turned into this thing where you have to be a teacher to grow. Not all of us want to teach or create "value" posts with a bunch of tips, some of us just like to create just like in real life. Instagram started off as a fun scrapbook/portfolio type of app and had a great algorithm to compliment it. Now it's just turned into something that tries to funnel everyone down the same path. Many 'value' or tips posts you see are just rehashed or shitty tips anyway by people trying to play the game and appease the algorithm.

I create things, I don't care about teaching. Let the teachers do that

social media is anything you want it to be. easy as that. somebody wants to show off, being in contact, inform about something...you name it. and yes, it can be a portfolio too, obviously.

Great video. I currently only have 3500 followers on insta but am working on expanding my stuff. My main focus right now is my discord and website and I do client readings too but I need to organize all that better.

Ok this is the most important advice I've ever been given, thanks so much for that.

Even though this is a traditional way of thinking, I partially agree with what he's saying. That's why you also see many people make multiple social media accounts.
