You’re so right. Over consumption is a huge problem. Nobody needs so much stuff.

As a former Emirates flight attendant: I’ve seen sooo many people boarding the plane, quickly taking a photo in business class and going to economy where their seat was. Don’t believe social media

I was heavily into shopping, getting my nails done, going on expensive vacations. Then, I was hit with a diagnosis of a very serious medical condition. Now, living on government assistance, I would love to have the money in a savings account rather than a closet full of designer handbags and a vanity covered in niche perfume.
Gone are the days are the days of endless shopping, flat stomachs and perfect nails. Now, I devote my time to rescuing animals and giving them a better life. Honestly, I am happier than I have been in many years.

Re: Flying first class - I was a flight attendant for several years and 99.999% of those who fly first class on a regular basis are business people. They never take photos of themselves and rarely do they even want anything from us! I've had so many business passengers just get on the plane and fall asleep. When we would have passengers in first class ringing the call button and demanding drink after drink we knew they weren't regular fliers, and they were oftentimes the rudest people on the plane. That, above everything else, screams "classless" to me which ironically is the opposite of what they're trying to convey to the internet!

Being disabled or having a chronic illness can make it so hard to be on social media, I feel like I should be doing something more with my life, and I have to stop and remember being disabled is it’s own full time job

Honestly the best thing I ever did was delete my social media and now I just focus on books, YouTube, reading articles about stuff that interests me. I even made it a strong point to cater my YouTube to what’s good for me mentally. Any videos that pop up that recommend things that could mentally bug me I block or put not interested. I can’t even begin to tell you how much happier and how much more free time I have then my friends. I’m married as well and I enjoy keeping my personal life personal 😂🤷🏽‍♀️ Who would of thought the idea of privacy would be considered out of the norm in society

The sooner people realize that an addiction to shopping is a form of subjugation in buying crap we don’t need with money we don’t have, the better off they are. I stopped this years ago and am far better off. I’d rather be mortgage free than own all this crap that influencers are peddling. Once you realize that it is indeed crap, shit, junk, garbage, the better you can free yourself from this addiction.

Let's normalize being hot messes in our 20's again ala Gen X.

I used to get my nails done a lot in the early 00's when you could get a full set for like $25 in LA because there were nail shops on every corner. Also, nails were less fancy back then so a simple polish change wouldn't take that long and might be $10 including tip.

What people have to remember is that for these content creators consuming is their job. Also, they are going into debt and returning a lot of stuff. Their financials aren't always in order.

Im here because i work in an expensive bedding shop. I am 4 weeks in and cant believe what people buy. They come in and spend hundreds on bedding sets and say things like "hmm no not that one, i have a similar set in my villa in spain" or "im here because I'm looking for a change up. Im bored of the sheets I have on now, its been a few months". And I just think excuse me? Do you know the time, effort, land and resources these items have took to make, but you're bored of them after a few months? It has really opened my eyes to how bad things have got. Just 20 years ago we used to keep using things until they were no longer functional, but now people go out and spend £100 on a bedspread every 6 months because they think their bedroom has to always be ready for a photoshoot. It needs to stop, its not normal.

That's exactly what I tell myself when I find myself feeling envious of people I see on social media, whether it's trips or material goods: "It's not normal." Also, things aren't always as they seem. It can appear like people have it easy, or things come easy. Like a family I know just went to Disney for a week, and stayed at one of their very expensive resorts. My first thought was, "Aww! I wish I could do that for my kids!!!" Later, I found out that the parents are both super hard-working, so much that their kids are in daycare very early in the morning, and get picked up very late in the evening. (Not judging - just saying how it is.) Meanwhile, I'm a stay-at-home mom, so we've had to make sacrifices (a one-night trip to Niagara Falls is our idea of a vacation.😆) but I'm thankful I was able to be at home with my kids, and they get dropped off and picked up my me. Anyway, it's all based on perspective, and people's priorities.

I HATE SOCIAL MEDIA! I’m glad I deleted it years ago! I even need a break from YouTube sometimes as well! It’s all toxic 🤮

I agree with the flat tummy. A lot of people don't realize that you have to be at a very low body fat percentage (around 15-16%) but also have some muscle built up to look "good". That takes a lot of work at the gym and in the kitchen. Realistically most people can't keep that up long-term. Also, most of them are sporting a good tan - which will help define your muscles/body.

I dislike "shovel nails" with a passion.😂 it is unhygienic, for sure. Imagine what kind of stuff gets pucked up under those things. I wash my hands 20 times a day, I wash dishes, I wash some garments by hand sometimes, I cook, peel vegetables etc. How could an average, normal woman function and do chores while having long, pointy nails?

Omg! Preach! I had a severe shopping addiction for years. It was causing so much stress in my 15 year marriage. The constant boxes showing up would make my husband so angry. (I was a stay at home mom during those years). For the past year, I’ve been a personal stylist at Nordstrom. I’m not really sure why it’s changed, but I no longer struggle with the shopping problem. Possibly because I’m around all the beautiful designer products all day and it has scratched the itch. Either way I’m grateful I’ve come out on the other side more insightful about my behavior. ❤from Chicago!!

YouTubers APOLOGIZING for having natural, normal fingernails. Yikes.

I'm 50 years old and I've traveled I would say a normal amount, and never have I flown anything other than coach. Still arrived at the same destination!

I’m Gen X - and I honestly think so much of what social media shows is fake! I go on holiday in the U.K. (where I live) every year because … not leaving the dogs! I have also flown first in the past and yeah it’s not normal. My nails are a mess! I don’t have a gorgeous home - it’s full of dog hair. I love bags, but I don’t think I need forty Chanel’s. Im happy! I just think the PRESSURE that social media puts on people in their 20’s is horrendous.

As a person in my early 30s, I'm really glad to hear you say shopping takes soo much time. Shopping is exhausting!

1. Never had my nails done. I always believed it wasn't the healthiest.
2. Flew once in first class, meh flying itself used to be elitist in general. Now that has changed significantly.
3. I love to travel. I do it on the cheap. I don't know how people do all-inclusive or 5 star hotels consistently. Most get sponsored or asked to do promotions.
4. I'm over handbags... next! Most influencers can afford these. They come from comfortable financial backgrounds. I never followed people who came from the same life experiences as I do and often they come from money.
5. All photos are taken in the best light, before eating, and after a workout. I put water in my mouth and I boat, it's hormonal for me. I'm over fake skinny. Women need to stop judging, we are cruel to each other. Men love women in all shapes and sizes. Let's celebrate all body shapes.
