Port workers strike, explained

Показать описание
Thousands of longshoremen went on strike at ports along the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico Monday at midnight, halting trade in a wide range of goods and disrupting the economy weeks before the presidential election.
The strike affects products shipped in containers — everything from toys to medicine — along with cars and trucks at as many as 36 ports between Maine and Texas. Shippers and port managers have been preparing for months in anticipation of disruptions, but analysts say a huge volume of imports and exports will still be affected.
Here’s what to know about the dispute and the potential fallout.

I'm sorry, are you telling me that workers who literally control our access to international or intercoastal shipping are NOT given raises to keep up with inflation? What exactly did they think would happen?

Believe me I know they’re on strike. I’m sitting at a dock right now for my trailer to get unloaded but if I gotta wait a week or a month i don’t care. If there’s a strike there’s a good reason and I wish them nothing but success

The fact that importers stocked up on product instead of putting more effort into teams negotiating a good deal for postal workers

Why is it than when workers and corporations are disagreeing, and the government steps in to settle the disagreement, they always do so by suppressing the workers? If we're going to force one of the parties to give in, why not force the companies to give in to the demands of the workers?

Why do so many people blame high prices at the grocery store on other average people just wanting fair pay? Why don't people blame capitalism/greed run wild for inflation? More and more billionaires all the time and more and more average people living in tents or under the overpass.

I love how every workers strike is basically just "hey could our wages please keep up with inflation" and all the companies are like "haha no because we are monsters"

Companies and people should understand how important these people are to the fabric of the US, they should be given a raise or else things will get worse

Just so everyone is clear: DO NOT GO PANIC BUYING THINGS. Not all products will be effected and the ones that are we may not notice the effect for about a month. The strike I know mainly will effect banans and sugar (there are more I cant remember them though)

Oh prices will spike. Immediately. Even if there is a years extra supply of something, they will hike the prices today and blame the strike. Then, months after the shortage and strike ends, prices will eventually settle back down to notably higher than what they were yesterday. Weird how that works every time.

I work at Costco and people are Covid buying TP and paper towels again. I spent 3 hours today and 3 yesterday stocking this aisle before open.
