Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas began walking picket lines early Tuesday in a strike over wages and automation that could reignite inflation and cause shortages of goods if it goes on more than a few weeks.

The contract between the ports and about 45,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association expired at midnight, and even though progress was reported in talks on Monday, the workers went on strike. The strike affecting 36 ports is the first by the union since 1977.

Workers began picketing at the Port of Philadelphia shortly after midnight with signs that read “Fight automation, save jobs, ILA demands” and “Automation hurts families. ILA stands for job protections.”

The U.S. Maritime Alliance, which represents the ports, said Monday evening that both sides had moved off of their previous wage offers, but when picket lines went up just after midnight, it was apparent that no deal had been reached.

Imagine if the government didn't take 50% of what you earn—there’d be no need to strike, and your family could live much better.

The administration has been hands off for all crisis in our country but very hands on for every other countries crisis.

They’ll get higher wages, and the companies will do what they always do…pass the cost along to everyone else in the supply chain, including the consumer.

These people make really good money. They're not hurting financially. All this is going to do is continue to make the cost of goods rise. The consumer is going to endure their pay raise. 77% over 6 years.

While ILA workers fight to go from 150k a year to 200k a year the truckers suffer the most.😢 The truck drivers always get the short end of the stick. No work and pay while this last.

Dockworkers signing their own pink slips. This will compel shippers to automate. Robots don't whine, need pay raises, or complain about vacation time. I say automate it all, bring my costs down. They better take a coding class 😂😂😂

Stock up everybody.
It won't show tomorrow or probably this week.
It will show up in a few months if it goes on for long.
