Go further back to the Cuban Missile Crisis...when a soviet sub decided to launch a nuclear-tipped torpedo after thinking sounding depth charges were actually an attack from a destroyer. 2 of the 3 officers agreed to launch, but Captain Alexei Arkhipov did not believe they were justified. That's how close we came to a nuclear war in 1962.

I remember seeing this in the theaters...you were on the edge of your seat fearing that the launch order was still standing...

Biggest plot twist:
EAM - US Naval Command - Remove Capt Ramsey of command immediately for not following procedure on nuclear weapons launch. Cmdr Hunter is to be installed in command.

Hunter: I guess as my first action as captain we should launch. 🤷

Ramsey: *Shook*

That cheeky look Denzel gives at 1:03 is such good acting.

0:19 " YEAH " Vossler was happy not because he fixed the radio but because of what he saw in the message
" TERMINATE LAUNCH, ALL MISSILES "

One of my all time favorite movies and one of my favortie scenes in the movie other than the climax.

For those who watched this movie - Who thought the EAM wud say "stand down" and who thought it wud be the Russians have fired their missles? Forgetting there is No winner in a Nuclear War - War Games proved that back in the 80s

This seems like a great video game. Mutinies on a nuclear submarine.

Why is there a dog on board? Also, did the Navy allow smoking in a submarine back then?

I was wondering about the surprised look on gene hackman when he read the message and looked at denzel... Did he really wished the message would give the go to launch?... Was it about whether to launch the nuke regardless of starting a nuclear war or was it only about his ego that nobody tells him what to do??.... Any thoughts on what he was thinking that time?

So, what would happened if this was real? Seems to me a partial message would be enough to give pause. But the Captain said a partial message is no message. Anyone in the know care to give their opinion?

This movie is great, but I think they made a mistake by portraying Hunter and his team as the good guys, and Ramsey and his team as the bad guys. The writers clearly want us to side with Hunter. They should've portrayed them as roughly equals, only with different (but equally valid) approaches to the situation, and let each viewer decide. It's an interesting question: you were given orders to launch nuclear missiles and then you lost communication. Do you still launch and possibly cause a holocaust? Or hold fire and possibly expose your country to an attack? There's no right answer, at least morally. It depends on each person.
