I've shamelessly expropriated a line from this, and use it with my students in class. "We're here to study democracy, not to practice it." :)

The best mentoring I got from this scene was don't question my authority in front of the men. I did that in the Navy, and I do that now in my career, and it has helped me tremendously.

Ramsey made some bad calls, but I totally agree with his timing on drills. Use situations like that to your advantage. Nothing ever occurs in a vacuum. If something only works under ideal conditions, it doesn’t work.

Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington... Acting so good, it’s not acting.

"What'd you think, son? That I was just some crazy old coot, putting everyone in harm's way as I yelled YEE-HAW!?"
I'm still laughing

*_"That means we don't question each other's motives in front of the crew. It means we don't undermine each other."_*
Where was that wisdom when he was absolutely shitting on his XO over the intercom in his cute little "morale speech".
I think the movie failed to portray the captain properly. His reaction to Hunter's innocent remark about the galley fire possibly flaring back up was WAY over the top. His subsequent behavior indicates a narcissistic personality.
It feels like there's a whole part of the missile drill scene that got cut. A part of the scene where hunter was being unreasonable.

I love the provocation of this film: liberal vs conservative points of view, while making sure the audience understands the context of naval command and why these two men come to intellectual and physical blows.

The character that Gene Hackman plays (Captain Ramsey) In my opinion is an overbearing PRICK. He has absolutely ZERO respect for anybody on the boat, including his XO. His character should have retired from the military years ago.
People like Captain Ramsey abound in the military. They're everywhere you go.

Nidhi, US presidents are here to preserve democracy, not practice it. The world is a beautiful place purely because of the west and their values otherwise we all would be like a living hell. Peace.
