Weps (Viggo)’s reaction is the most emotionally satisfying but also most haunting in this scene. Talk about the most conflicted officer of the crew, a consummate professional loyal to his captain, yet caring and devoted to his friend the XO, and determined to keep his team trained and efficient. He had just faced the sickening moral dilemma of agreeing to join the counter-mutiny, yet also while harboring feelings of agreement with the XO on taking the time to confirm the cut-off message before launching the missiles half-cocked. And then he made the exceptionally gutsy decision of stalling for time as the XO’s counter-counter-mutiny took place, almost got his head blown off by his own captain, and nearly watched one of his sailors get his head blown off. Yet he stuck with his gut and played the most singularly decisive role in correctly stopping the launch. Still, talk about a man who might need counseling, certainly for PTSD, after this patrol.

It would be the most awkward return to port especially since they were all willing to kill each other.

I like that Hunter didnt trust Zimmer and the other guy like he did before when they got the first EAM. This time, after they mutinied upon against him, he took the message and the authenticator from them to authenticate himself. Nice detail.

Hackman’s reaction in the look he gives Denzel at 1:50 is why he is a masterful actor. His face says several different things all at once.

This could have been over-dialogued from about 1:50, but instead, the captain merely says “Mr. Hunter has the con.”

Tony was pissed at Vossler for fixing the radio and later shoots him.

Denzel's little "pop" of the plastic code card against the paper is great, His sign telling the Captain "See, I fking told you so".

The way Hunter snatches the paper out of Zimmer's hand 😂😂😂😂

I just LOVE these two shots with Viggo Mortensen from 1:25 to 1:30. The lights, the closed fist, the relief, the amazing music. Tony Scott at his best here.

One of the most amazing movies! Compare that to the garbage that comes out now.. This scene shows so many things at once - about human beings, about life. The way the sailors cheer when they get the realization, that there's not going to be a nuclear war, speaks volumes. Inspite of human beings innate propensity for violence, it also shows us desperately seeking peace. A lot of things in life may seem right at the same time, but things can quickly fall either way all depending upon circumstance, as shown so beautifully in this movie. We miss these kind of movies.

It’s a genuine miracle mankind hasn’t blown itself to hell yet.

Both Aragorn and Tony Soprano would later draw inspiration from their time in the US Navy.

The tension in the theater during this scene was through the roof...you felt as though the order for launch was still legit and they were too late.

Most accurate bubblehead movie ever made. Pride and joy of John Paul Jones and the US Navy. A DVD copy hangs framed in the entrance of ONI HQ, Maryland. Semper Fortis. Anchors away!

Tony Soprano seemed disappointed that there will be no nuclear war, and a nuclear wasteland of Earth.
