Autism Sensory Issue NO ONE TALKS ABOUT!

When you think about autism you also think about sensory processing disorder. However no one talks about this part of autism sensory issues.

This sensory issue is that of heat, and cooling. I like many other autistic people, with sensory processing needs, have issues with temperatures in rooms and environments.

this amazing little gadget helps me keep cool when I need to be cool, which is pretty much all the time.

I feel like I have a faulty thermostat 🙈 if its warm then my body thinks it’s in an volcano, if its cold, my body still reacts like its in a volcano 😂 I laugh but it can be a miserable time lol

Anyone who suffers with heat, especially when feeling emotional, take some time to run your wrists under cold water whenever you can! It works a treat and is a game changer in work or social environments where its difficult to 'escape'.

I'm glad it's not just me that is like this. When I am hot it just pushes me over the edge in being able to control interactions and how I respond. Definitely will check this out

I got in big trouble at work one day when I was suffering from heat exhaustion. Lost my position and everything. I probably should have taken myself to the emergency department, but part of my autism is never knowing when to ask for help.

Omg I thought the temperature issue was just me! I can't handle heat AT ALL. I like to stay cool too! I'm always overheated. The heatwave is hell for me. Love the look of that cooler of yours. I got a similar one recently yay!

I’m miserable in the hot weather. I can’t bare it. I hate being hot and feel like I’m going die. I just found out we can get one of these at work though!

I get sick when I'm hot. Not only do I live in a desert (we're about to reach 110 f soon), but my dad likes the house at 79/80 degrees. and my room is usually a bit hotter because of my pc. I always have fans on, including one pointed directly at my face.

I have a neck fan like that, though it doesn't cool the neck. It works wonders when you have to wear glasses and a mask, like during covid. My glasses didn't fog up as much.

I'll have to check out this one.

I have had the temperature issue as well. Until a couple of years ago, I was always hot, no matter the temperature. I could never get cool. I wore sandals and shorts when it was snowing outside. A couple of years ago, I suddenly started losing weight for no apparent reason. I lost 100lbs in about 18 months. I had been over weight my entire life, and now weigh less at 41 years old than I weighed at 13. Since losing the weight, I am always cold, no matter the temperature. It is over 100 degrees F where I live right now, and I am running a heater. I can't explain it. I went from one end of the spectrum to the other.

I genuinely didn't know this was an autism thing too! I thought i was just unusually sensitive to my own body temperature or something for no reason. I always feel pretty warm or hot to the point of overheating and getting very stressed when even stuff like a thin bed sheet have me feeling hot

Oh, I've been insulted many times on this particular topic.
Because I am very sensitive to cold air during summer time and sometimes wear additional cloth like stockings or blouse.
I especially hate seasons change. Because when it comes hot I wear winter clothes longer and respectively it is November and I still wear polar blouse outdoor.
I am also prone to change of microclimate. If I travel to differrent region I need a couple of days to adapt.

I cannot STAND being hot/too warm. Literally it makes me feel physically sick. My son (neurotypical but just a bit ADD) doesn't understand why I ALWAYS have to leave a fan or ac on. Doesn't help that I have some extra insulation and he doesn't. lol
I'd be SUPER interested in that gadget but.... $300 is out of my price range. :(

I get summertime sadness. Born and raised in Hawaii, it is summer year round, I need to escape or live in the water haha.

Yes! I have one of those! (I think mine may be the cheaper knock-off because yours looks a little sleeker and has that fun case lol.) I find it really helpful, as heat is a huge sensory issue for me. I'm so glad you've brought this up! You're right, it's hardly ever mentioned in this context.

I overheat WAY too easily. in the winter, when we reach about 40f (about 5c) on average, I'm usually wearing shorts to help keep me from getting too hot, meanwhile, in the summer, when it averages about 95f (35c), I'm pretty much dying... and then we get as high as the 100s f (about 40c), and I'm dead... Although my case may be related to being hit with heat stroke when I was about 15 or 16... but never considered it could also be another possible symptom of autism to have such issues...

I never knew this was an issue for Autistic people. I prefer the cooler weather, but I have issues with staying warm when its cold, especially with my hands and feet as I have Raynauds and thatcan cause spasms in blood vessels and restricts blood flow so when that happens it can affect my circulation and make my hands and feet cold. In the colder months, I get flare ups of Eczema on my hands which I don't get in the summer and that is restricting sometimes and I have to put cream on my hands and wear gloves.

On the other hand, I get too hot when it gets above 19-20C. I really hate when I feel hot and get sweaty. I feel really uncomfortable when I am sweaty and find it hard to relax and concentrate when that happens, especially if it happens to my feet or armpits (sorry if that is gross to anyone). I can find it very hard to cool down and it can make sleeping for me hard when its warm.

My partner is constantly too cold from their autism, and I am the exact opposite, I overheat almost constantly, we also get other strange sensory issues,
my hands can often not tell temperatures correctly so I need to get someone to confirm if I've actually cooked food the right amount 😅
