The longsword was never the most popular sword in it's time, but it is absolutely one of the most versatile!

There is evidence that it was used as an every day weapon, as well as strong evident that it was used and favored by many military men, duelists, and even the average citizens for a time!

It never saw the same widespread use as swords like the Langmesser or the arming sword, possibly due to the cost and complexity of its construction, but during is 160-200 year run of popularity it was not an uncommon site.

If you want some more info on the popularity of the longsword, check out this video by Matt Easton of Scholagladiatoria

2 guys approached eachother menacingly with their weapon unsheathed.
"This steel is forged 10 times to make it stronger, It will destroy you!"
"Your steel was found in a bog, The longsword was the height of technology!"
"Prepare yourself."
After some epic fights they decided to accept their differences and jump the guy who was using reverse grip instead.

I hear you, I see you, and I raise you that a machete or hatchet is still used as a primary killing tool in the 3rd world countries. 😁

Joking aside, would you know how easy it would be for the average say... yeoman, to get ahold of a longsword instead of say an arming sword? And have you ever considered crossover videos with other youtubers like skallgrim or shad? I believe your work is top notch and entertaining and definitely deserves a larger audience. Thank you to your whole crew for all the hard work you put into your videos.

It slices, it dices, it protects your family! But wait, there's more! Do you need to keep those pesky wolves off you're field, but can't block? Introducing the kite shield! Well throw it in for only 6 silver pieces!

Honestly my biggest argument against one in modern times other than guns existing would be how often we sit for transportation etc and the chair / cabin designs not being forgiving enough to let it dangle or be tucked safely away. It's hard enough with a large knife

I want to walk around town with a sword, not because i see myself needing it, but because swords are cool

When you talk about all these awesome weapons do you mean in a dueling sense or actual warfare? Also I love the content you make and the attention you bring to these awesome pieces of history!

It is too bulky to walk around town with it dangling on your waist, evidence being that whenever the commoners were allowed to own and wear swords they opted to carry shorter ones like arming swords and messers. Another evidence is period art (Durer) that shows longswords not hanging on people's waists when being carried around populated areas (also supported by Fiore's work in some of his play involving the possibility of being attacked while seated like in a tavern)

The comparison with rapiers are funny because Matt Easton mentions that during the Elizabethan period in England people were complaining about rapiers smacking people in the leg and that the queen herself was annoyed by this and put restrictions on the length of the sword you're allowed to wear in her court.

You say swords aren't practical but I'd never leave home without mine if I lived in England.

The sword is really a great analogy for a pistol, any given variant is a pound or two have your foreign equivalent role. But It's a sidearm that's relatively convenient, and it's existence and utilization pretty much defines the minimum standard for body armor.

I think you’re probably wrong - the reason the bulky-ass, slow longsword rose to prominence was to deal with armor, and once armor was not a huge factor, it was replaced by lighter blades like the rapier and the sabre.

When fighting an unarmored opponent, you don’t really need a longsword - it’s a one-hit-kill, but you’ll probably get a bunch of fatal wounds by the time you land it on an unarmored guy with a rapier.

It'd also act as a deterrent the same way as modern open carry. Ruffians will respect the sword on the hip drip more than a messerless maidenless man.
