The viral video where somebody dropped a katana on a piece of cardboard as some people convinced the katanas have an automatic edge aligning property...

But what they don't understand is in that situation the katana was resting with its hilt on the ground, and it was dropped with no external force. This is such an artificial scenario, that it will literally never come up in combat.

Both the katana, the longsword, and every other sword require the user to align the sword to their target with their hands.

The fulcrum lever and load in a cut are totally different than the silly drop test experiment. The conditions are nowhere near comparable.

The stupidest part is, both of these are good weapons. Neither is better than the other, their specialised in different things. But weebs are so obsessed with katanas that they have to make up weird myths to explain why they are superior 🤣

The joy of that double cut gives me years of life.

if katanas had auto edge alignment then there wouldn't be competitions in Japan around cutting mats

I guess a lightsaber is an auto edge aligning sword. Every direction you strike from is an edge.

I just have to say; I’m very thankful you’re still posting content despite how many dorks on the internet want to argue with you on seemingly EVERY post you make. May your wine be sweet, and your fish never too salty. Thank you again.

Ou want a sword with automatic edge alignment? That's called a "stick". Everything is a striking edge with it. XD

The main thing about edge alignment that is basically never adressed is the profile of the handle. If the handle is oval, you have a much better chance of getting your edge alignment right than when it's round since you feel where the front of the sword is. That being said, there are tons of longswords that also have oval or diamond-shaped handles, so the edge alignment is about the same. The curvature of the blade helps stabilize the cut a little bit, but compared to a good handle profile, that's pretty much negligible. Also, as a sidenote, the curvature of the blade was not intended to make it cut better, i'ts just that it came out of the quench that way. The curvature of katanas hasn't even been standardized until the kamakura period, which was about 300 years after japanese swords were put into diffrent categories (compare for example the curvature of the Suiryuken, which has almost no curve at all, to the Mikazuki Munechika. Both would have been referred to as "Ken" which just straight up means "Sword")

All you need for edge alignment is to attach a laser to the sword.

If katanas had automatic edge alignment, there wouldn't be tatami cutting competitions. They'd just be like, "yup, that cut."

Ah. But the long sword has 2 edges. With 2 automatic edge alignment they will cancel each other out

Sometime I just wonder how people can be so dumb to say that katana have automatic edge alignement, go say that to a Japanese sword master and see how he kicks you out for disrespecting the works/training it took for him to master his art.

No matter what sword you use, if you lack skill and legwork, you should not wield a sword

I saw this Katata YouTube channel trying to prove why the katana is the best sword. You wanna know what they said? It is better because of the curve, it makes it easier to break through the target

I don't think this dude even knows if European swords exist. The channels reasons were just stupid

Thank you for subtly calling out mini katana

Huge misconception, it doesn’t have “automatic edge alignment” the curved blade does however make it easier to cut due to the curve. It makes it easier to find level with the blade in the hands than a typical straight/longsword

That was beautiful. And those weapons are amazing. I watch almost all your videos and love your content. Keep it up! You’re awesome! As a fencer in the sense of epee, I watch what you do and I know it’s authentic and realistic. Love it man. Keep it up. As a side note though where do you get your swords from. Thinking of getting some. Thanks and keep it up!

Man, why can’t people accept when they’re wrong. This guy has proved it wrong numerous times by now.

I personally prefer a long sword or rapier over a katana for the better thrusting design and double edge

No matter how sharp a sword is, if it's in the hands of the wrong person, it's useless.
