My short experience of hema was everyone studying the treatises, practicing the form/cuts stances edge position etc. Then sparring & using the sword as if it were a club/hammer.

I knew a guy in a historical fighting group (not HEMA, but similar). Who wore the bare minimum of required armor. Also he was terrifying, and they didn't let him fight the newer members.
