Remember it is quicker to change to your sword than to reload your spear.

I can speak from a tiny bit of experience on this.

When in a firefight, you want something like an M249 a or an M240B, the rest of the time (when you're not shooting) you want a 9mm pistol.

The thing about war - you'll spend about 99% of your time not in firefights (if you're special forces of some kind, that statistic is probably different).

Warfare in the ancient world and medieval world was no different. Most of the time, your weapons are big, awkward inconveniences you have to lug around because Sergeant said you had to. That 1% of the time you're actually fighting, you want the biggest stick you can get.

Great stuff 😁

"B-b-but Musketeers only wore rapiers!"
Yeah, to complement _their muskets_

Thanks for the heads-up about the American specific comparison. As a Frenchman, I appreciate the preparation time.

The spear was the king of battle until artillery became common. Then we turned guns into spears.

People so often fall for romanticized history where dueling replaces the battlefield, they just wanna see similar opponents face off with like weaponry, forgetting or ignoring the fact that swords were backup weapons.

An oft-overlooked aspect about swords and spears is that spears are logistically much easier to field, replace, and repair. This makes them much better as weapons of war.

Swords are expensive, often prohibitively so. They also require much more training to use effectively, so they tend to be reserved for elite troops or officers.

Miyamoto Musashi nicely explains the issue of the difference and advantages of weapons in his book.

I find myself on the field of war and have lost my spear, but have my sword in hand. In front of me is a scary looking warrior with a spear made for killing people on the field of war.

My question is:

Is the reverse grip on my sword better for running away?

And that's why when i was writing a combat squad for a fighters guild in a fantasy story i had the squad leader carrying a sword as he stayed in the back giving orders and supporting while the main, front line fighter carried a spear.

A spear is your assault weapon, the sword is a personal defense weapon.

Spears were alot more common than films do them justice since you just need to teach a peasant or new member of an army which side you push into the enemy and it works well in formation

I am so glad you mentioned this. People think wars were fought with all swords and shields, but no. A spear could overtake a sword easily, in most cases, but each weapon has its place. I'd like to learn how to handle one just for fun.

The spear is also much cheaper, and is easier to use with little training. which means it’s better for arming a large an army with.

I'm glad you covered this, the spear is a medium to long range weapon, medium up close and long if you can throw it but the accuracy of hitting the target is much harder than shooting an arrow. The bo staff is the same way, its a medium range weapon just as the sword is, the spear gives you a longer reach but if your opponent gets within 3 feet of you, you might have trouble minivering, this coming from someone who is self trained using the bo staff my favorite weapon. A sword would be your next best bet if the staff no longer works, or if you have to, switch to a dagger and take the opponent down as quickly as possible. All weapons are good for something, but not all are good for a specific situation

Ive been making the analogy for so long. It even goes a bit deeper than that. Like how duels were done with swords or pistols.

I have made this same comparison. Even down to how handguns have a lot of funny tricks and techniques that don't apply to rifles.

Too many nerds and former weebs have taken the idiotic "katana > everything" argument and just transplanted it onto whatever weapon is their favorite. Spears > Everything, no Longsword > Everything, no Pollax > Everything. Even my first HEMA teacher said that there is no better weapon than a Longsword and even then my eyes nearly rolled out of my head (and I mainly train longsword!)

Shut up. This isn't a video game and weapons' worth isn't measured solely on how they work against each other.

Remember, switching to your sword is faster than fetching another spear.

As an American THANK YOU for the clarity I don’t even know what those were exactly until you brought it to understandable terms

That's probably also why a sword is the optimal dungeon crawling weapon. A spear would basically be scraping the ceiling
