2009 - 2014 F150 Transmission Filter & Fluid Change DIY

Relatively quick video on how to change the fluid and filter in your 6r80 transmission in your 2009 - 2014 F150. This should be the same procedure for any other vehicle with this transmission.

The parts I used for this maintenance work are as follows:

The bolts holding the transmission pan on are 8mm.

This is a project that can be done easily in your driveway with hand tools and can save you a ton of money over the dealership doing the work.

It should be noted that I have installed a Performance Automotive PA68404 transmission dipstick. I use this to refill my transmission rather than the ford procedure which requires you to fill the transmission from below. Overall the dipstick worked wonderfully.

Good work. I’d change it sooner next time though, that fluid was a little on the dark side, I’m sure you trans will be fine but it would just be healthier to do it a bit sooner. The older Ford trucks had a drain plug, guess they decided to cut costs... Some GM trucks had a drain plug but oddly if you tried to loosen one the threaded insert on the back side would spin & you wouldn’t be able to remove the plug, just loosen it enough to create a leak lol!

I have a Ford F150 5.0 2013, so I always go to your videos before I do any maintenance myself. Keep it and up and thanks for being a national hero.

You pretty well nailed it" I have a 2012 F150 that's right at a hundred thousand miles so I need to change it so" they could of designed it with a drainage bolt if they've wanted too, but this makes where most people will have a mechanic do it"

A bit late in my comment Mr. Torino.. I had planned to put a drain plug in mine. So not to make such a mess, I pre- drill a hole in the pan. I put some shrink tubing on the drill bit so is not to go in to far. Placed a small magnet near the hold. Drained slow but steady. 😎

Ah yes, can't forget the kitty litter... Haven't thought about that in quite a while, not doing much of my own work, but it's a life saver when it comes to cleanup!

The recommendation from most shops now, for the 6L80 and 6L90 transmission, is a fluid change after the first 30K miles and then every 60K miles thereafter. When you do a drain & fill (which is recommended), rather than a flush (not recommended), only half of the transmission fluid is replaced. For this reason alone, the more frequent fluid change is probably a good idea. These transmissions do have issues with the torque converters and the torque converter failures propagate to the rest of the transmission. NEVER substitute the Ford Motomaster Mercon LV transmission fluid with any other brand. My son's 2014 GMC 1500 Denali just had a torque converter failure on the 6L90. The torque converter had to be replace and the rest of the transmission was fully rebuilt with "Sonnax Zip-Kit" upgrades. The total cost of repair here in Canada was just over $4, 300.00 with taxes. Also note, we can't find an aftermarket dip stick assembly for this transmission in Canada for under $500. About double what is sells for in the U.S. Just crazy that Ford engineers didn't design a similar dip stick for this transmission. Because the engineers didn't design a drain plug in the trans pan, they should be shot.

I don't know why... but my 2010 F-150 4.6 engine have a transmission fluid dipstick under hood...I like it...

Wow that was messy but informative. There is a small dipstick on the side of the transmission which can be removed with a 19 mm wrench. Once removed you can slide a small hose through that opening and suck out the oil. You can do the same through the extended dipstick tube.

Excellent how to video. I have this same truck except without the 4 wheel drive. The manual says to take it to a Ford dealership to have this done. I will do it myself following your video. The dipstick dilemma created by Ford was completely unnecessary. Just another way for them to make people not do their own maintenance.

Informative video, I will be doing this job soon thanks to this. Say, how does it drive after the fresh oil?

I need the link to the aftermarket dip stick I installed! I didn’t see a link in the description I just want to make sure I get a good brand name that’s built well so there is no issues!

I watch these videos of trans fluid change and can never understand why not use a extraction pump to remove 85% of the fluid before removing the pan, much easy to do and less of a mess when dropping the pan.

Nice work. I’ve been wondering how the trans fluid dipstick has been treating you. Sounds like it’s been good to go. I need to get one on my truck.

Thanks for the great video. I just changed mine yesterday following your steps. I used a vacuum pump to suck all the fluid out first to prevent a messy floor. It worked perfectly and only left a small amount of fluid in the very bottom of the pan. I used a hand pump to refill the 7.5 quarts. Initially, it took 6.5 quarts, so I reinstalled the plug, then ran the truck for a few minutes while manually shifting gears while stationary. Then I rechecked and topped off with another quart. Truck shifts perfectly with no leaks. Thanks again. How's the new truck treating you?

Great video! I am about to change my trans fluid/filter as well as front and rear diffs. There is actually a 3/4 inspection plug on the passenger side, right above the pan. It has fluid level indicators as well. Hope this helps and if you'd like a diagram, inbox me and I'll be happy to share.

So you lose 7.5 quarts when changing gasket not draining anything else?

How about a fluid evacuator to remove all the fluid in the pan, then drop the pan. The mess should be minimal.

Truck not shifting after fluid and filter change. Same after second try. Third time I put the old filter back in, new fluid and everything, then truck started shifting gears as normal. Just a heads up, sometimes a bad filter does happen.

Awesome video. My only question is regarding the amount of fluid you added. If I remember correctly, manual says that the transmission should take 13 quarts. Did the 7.5 quarts you added fill it up? Thanks
