We really have to commend Sony for continuing to support our beloved PS3, 17 years after it's release date. The store is still open & there was even a new 2023 system update.
What a beast of a machine it is. Mine has functioned without fault all this time I've got to say I'm absolutely f**kin impressed.

The original PS3 genuinely felt like a truly ‘premium’ console.
It’s a shame that they paid dearly for it for a large chunk of that generation (though, they came out on top eventually).

The capacitors were never the issue. There is a guy who did very deep research on the yellow light of death. Turns out, the GPU was not designed correctly on the first couple of models. The constant heating and cooling messed up internal solder points within the GPU chip itself. There are now fixes for it if you can get a specific type of PS3 slim, remove the GPU, and then replace it on your FAT PS3. Itll take some skill, or some money to pay someone skilled, but there is a way to save the original PS3's. Just figured I should point that out. The video is called A PS3 Story: The Yellow Light Of Death by RIP Felix

PS3 was an insane bargain considering the hardware they put inside it. I remember it being cheaper than a blu-ray disc drive!

Agree with everything you said! I have no idea why Sony moved away from the XMB interface. It worked perfectly on both the PS3 and the PSP.

I remember getting my first job in 2007 and saving up for a PS3 I was one of the few in my highschool that got the more expensive PS3 as opposed to the 360. Great console. Great memories.

Man i still look back fondly to Christmas 2008 when I got my PS3. Got Guitar Hero World Tour with it too. One of my favorite gifts ever. Still have it along with what I swear has to be 100 games. Its been a trooper over the years and still works great for me.

MGS4 was basically my sole reason to get a PS3. Other games such as Uncharted and Last of us have been rereleased or remastered, but to this date MGS4 remains a true PS3 exclusive for the PS3 only.

The PS3 in my opinion was one of the 1st modern consoles. Still holding up well. Features younger games may take as common originated on the PS3 and yes later XBOX 360. I wouldn't call the PS3 retro just yet, as the newer consoles haven't really innovated the way the PS3 did over a decade ago. Yea, resolution and graphics have gotten better and you can play some games in VR if you care about that but nothing like being to play a game in HD for the 1st time. Wireless controllers right out the box. Speaking of controllers, the original PS3 controller was quite innovative as well with motion controls built in (I know few games used it, but still.) You could run apps from it, play blue rays, surf the web, and so much. Ahead of its time when it released.

I am taking a ride to my storage unit RIGHT NOW to pick up my PS3. I haven’t played it since 2014. I was about to spend money on a PS5. But after watching this video, I am back in love with my PS3 and will enjoy it for a while longer before getting a new console. Thank you for this video!!!!

Ahh, got my PS3 in 2007, i was a sophomore in highschool. My first game? Assassin's Creed. The graphics and open world of that game was ahead of its time.

Running cfw was the best thing to ever happen to the piano black model aka the first ps3, and still is amazing to this day, this system and specifically the piano model may be the best system to have been released. Also, I don’t care what anyone says, Final Fantasy 13 was beautiful, amazing graphics and environmental detail. It’s actually the reason I got the console back in the day

Great video! 💯

I remember getting my PS3 "original" vividly.
Being a resident evil fanatic, I bought a GameCube in 2005 so I could play RE4.
I bought a PS3 the next year because at that time it was actually cheaper to buy the PS3 then to buy a Blu-ray player!

And slowly but surely the absolute killer games started being released on the console.
About a year later real high speed Internet hit my area.

I still don't own a PS4 or PS5. With the advent of modern PC gaming that actually was low technical stress (the youngsters don't know how horrible that used to be ), I never saw the need to upgrade my console.

Yesterday (3/05/2023), my PS3 finally gave up the ghost.

I think it's interesting that my first instinct was not to go look at prices of a PS4 or PS5, but I'm looking to replace my PS3.
I know I got lucky, but I've received almost 15+ years of near flawless use of my PS3. TVs came and went, but my PS3 kept kicking. I don't think I've ever owned a piece of electronics that has lasted this long (I've had my Mac mini for 10 years).

So thank you again for this video. I didn't know much about the "super slim" but you've convinced me to avoid it.

Lastly, Sony several months ago was going to stop supporting the PS3, but the noise from fans convinced them to at least postpone it. You can't buy games directly from the PlayStation store anymore, but you can buy a gift card from Amazon or some other source which works just fine.

And all this time later, a PS3 is still a great Blu-ray player. So I've come full circle.

I still have my launch 60gb Fat PS3 and it looks and works like brand new in the year 2022. I currently have it hooked up to my LG C1 65 inch with a surround sound system and the games still look good in todays standard based on the right picture settings used. Great video! 👍🏼 (Update) The fan noise level on my PS3 still remains at a constant level where it isn’t too loud when playing PS1-PS3 games. Since I have a PS5, I occasionally play my PS3 for a max of 3 hrs so it doesn’t overheat as well (warranty sticker still intact btw and never been opened). Remember these consoles are 15+ years old, so it’s important to take really good care of them so they can last on the long run. 🙏🏼

Well done! I have a PS3 slim and I upgraded the HD to 1 TB. I lose the PS2 compatibility but I was able to buy a lot of PS2 games via the PSN Store. It is also my Blu-ray 3D player. I actually discovered some great PS1 games via my PS3. I have had no issues with my Ps3 and it still plays perfectly.

Hi, grear vid, super informative. I did want to ask, I live in Canada so I think I have NTCS, not PAL(naturally). So does that change anything important, as far as the pluses, (or advantages) go? Like the backwards compatibility, et.?

Please let me know when you get a chance.

Cheers.

Glad I kept mine. I’ve used one as the basis for a stand-up arcade machine I built with joy/fighting sticks and tons of old(er) fighting games and arcade games. And the other I have hooked up to my home theater to play SOCOM 2 (best game ever!) online since some enthusiasts opened up servers for it.

The first PS3 was great. It was backward compatible. It allowed you to upgrade the HD very easily. It played Blurays. It allowed the Other OS feature. Then they took away the backward compatibility in subsequent models. Then they took away the Other OS. Of course, the YLOD was a major flaw of the first release. If you have one that still works, you're lucky.
