Why heartbreak hurts and how it can be fatal: Broken Heart Syndrome

Why do strong emotions cause chest pain? Why do even stronger emotions kill people? Answers direct from YouTube HQ (Educon 2019).

------------

Cardiologists like me get way too excited about Valentine's for all the wrong reasons. I spent the whole day at YouTube, then came home to edit this and get it up on Valentine's (who says romance is dead?), only to have it taken down immediately due to 60 seconds of music. You live and learn. This is re-uploaded version.

But Sony be warned - my wife only allowed me to forego my husbandly duties to upload this on Valentine's so now you have a furious pocket-sized ninja gunning for you. I'd be scared.

Takotstubo cardiomyopathy (Broken Heart Syndrome) and the reasons heartbreak causes physical pain.

Sorry about the dead space in the middle, sh*t happens nbd. Twitter link in the description for unedited version or try this: queue up Rising Hope by LiSA in another tab and hit play when you get to 00:06:14. Don't worry I don't use such low tech solutions when I operate on people.

PS - in the 30 mins it was up last night I got some really nice comments - thanks people, I went to bed thinking I'd reply to you all today but like that [kaiser soze gif], it was gone.

"Darling, my true love is...

Science." What a hopeless romantic. Great video, but it's a shame you had to ditch the awesome parody. I guess YouTube wasn't ready for it.

Reminds me of my fathers uncle. He died at the age of 86. His wife died the week after. They were married for almost 70 years (afaik) - and lived in the same little house in the countryside for their entire marriage.
No illness was involved - both died peacefully in bed at home.

Tom Scott, Philosophy Tube and Dr Hope! Looks like someone is hanging with the big brains. And justifiably so. Your videos are superb.

Actually (fun fact) in Brazilian Portuguese there is the expression "dor de cotovelo", that is literary translated as "pain in the elbow" and it is used when someone is sad about the end of a relationship or an one-sided love

4:17 Sorry, my favorite nerve is the Facial Nerve. My immersion was broken and I just can't identify to the video anymore.
I would unsubscribe, but I guess being a doctor of the heart means you'd prefer a heart nerve, so I guess I'll give you a pass this time.

My grandmother passed away shortly after my uncle, her only son, suddenly passed away at 32. She was just 57 years old at the time of her death.
I’m convinced that it was partly caused by the sadness of his death.
The other part is that our family has a terrible track record with our hearts. Sadly all but one member of my beloved moms family have passed away (well) before their 60s. My own mom passed away at 57 as well, when I was 32. I had to perform heart massage on her, and I failed. The biggest common denominator is that they all died without prior warning. So of course she didn’t solely die of a broken heart, but it was a contributing factor.

You're great, man. Your humor is so on point and the content is very educational. You really don't deserve a copyright strike that's terrible ):

I've been sufering from anxiety and panic attacks for about two years. At first i though it was a heart problem due to losing weight too fast (about 70 pounds in 8 months) and even went to emergency services after not being able to sleep for a week due to the fear and arrythmia it produced. Turns out, it was severe stress coupled with anxiety disorder (I lived in a socialist country all my life until recently, i've had my fair share of traumatic experiences). It's almost purely psycological, and once i started treatment the symptoms almost completely went away. Except... I'm now extremely sensible to descriptions (verbal or written) of pain, death or anxiety, to the point I begin to feel nauseous, my heart begins racing, and my mind goes to a horrible place thinking I could die on the spot. I realize it's all psycological, but there is little I can do to stop me from getting the symptoms other than immediately avoiding the thing and actively trying to think reassuring thoughts while i curl into a ball. I hate it. Makes me feel pathetic. I once got it while on a 2 hour bus to visit family, after hearing an elderly couple talk in the seats behind me about a funeral. It was about an hour of me trying to calm myself down while having cold sweats, trying my damn best to act normal and feeling both terrified and angry at my stupid brain for being like this. You could wonder, how then i am writing this now? well, this video triggered me hard and i had to stop it, and now i'm writting this out of sheer frustration while reminding my stupid self that i'm not actually in any danger and all of this is going away in a while. I'm sorry there is no real point to this comment, hope it's at least vaguely entertaining. I like your videos, I'll try to watch it after taking my meds.
