The Hyundai Ioniq 5 Is Car and Driver’s EV of the Year

If you want to know why the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is our EV of the Year, just look at it. Is this not the coolest new design on the road? Just when you thought the two-box crossover shape was permanently consigned to amorphous wind-tunnel blobbiness, along comes this collection of slashes and rectangles, all rakish and defiant but somehow still scoring a relatively slippery 0.29 coefficient of drag. This is high design for the masses, right down to the exotic-looking matte-gray paint—a $1000 option. Yes, that's all. The Ioniq 5's pricing, which starts at $41,245, is the only thing about it that's resolutely normal.

Owned the Ioniq 5 since March 7th and used the free Electrify America Superchargers seven times and they all worked and recharged within the 18 minutes. Best car that I have ever owned.

Got mine in February and it continues to impress. Was a VW and Audi driver forever and as my first Hyundai I'm hooked. Super fast, about $3.00 to fill up at home overnight, looks like a classic rally car, and I no longer giving my money to Putin and the Saudis as electricity is produced domestically. This car destroys my old German turbo diesels, I'll never go back.

I would have guessed it was between the Hyundai Ioniq 5 or the Kia EV6 (or Genesis GV60). The Hyundai group is simply mopping the floor with the competition currently...impressive stuff. The Genesis GV70 electrified is due next year so that should be another home run..

Better design language than recent BMWs

I agree that the Ioniq5 is the EV of the year. The problem is that all car prices are very high this year.

all three e-GMP cars are excellent. I love my EV6. The ioniq 5 and GV60 are also great cars. blazing fast charging, great performance, great interior space, fun to look at and drive. I'm not surprised to see this car winning EV of the year, at all. and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Ioniq 6 in the running for the same aware next year, though I doubt they'd give it to Hyundai two years in a row on principle. you can just tell that the reviewer and staff are having fun with the car. EVs just put smiles on people's faces, and the e-GMP cars especially. everyone who sees and drives my EV6 are almost magically converted within minutes. it's not going to be 120k EV sedans that are going to do it, it's these types of cars. every day crossovers that you drive the kids to school in, and to the beach on the weekend. Kia/Hyundai are quite savvy, they know this, and they really nailed these cars. they have quirks. Ioniq 5 should have a rear wiper. there are quirks. but none of them deal breakers and the overall car and execution is so good that they will sell tons of them, as many as they can make tax credit or not. wait until the ioniq 6 and 7 are released, those will be amazing cars too. Kia EV9? This is a golden age in vehicles. some of the best performing fastest vehicles in history going to people's driveways.

I agree fully with this choice for EV car of the year. At present the ionic 6 should win the EV car of the year next year because it’s even better than the ionic 5. Hyundai is killing it. They and Kia always had great prices With lots of features included for free and a great warranty… and for at least the past 10 years they’ve had high quality manufacturing. Now they also have beautiful design and they are unstoppable. The ionic 6 is my favorite car design of the past 20 years. My last two cars have been Kia‘s and my previous two cars before that were both Hyundai‘s. I was super happy with all four of them. No major repairs were needed and almost 0 minor repairs were needed. They rode nicely, they had lots of safety features including lots of airbags, they had nice stereos and they had cruise control when that was not common. You get a ton of stuff with the standard models and most people have no need of upgrading higher.

By contrast, almost no one is satisfied with a standard Tesla model and have to spend lots of money to upgrade… So much so that sometimes Tesla just eliminates the base or standard model and charges a ton of money. And a sizable number of things break or stop working. My sister has had a model X for 2 1/2 years and the passenger side window won’t go up and down. That is like the few people I know who drive 15 year old rust bucket junkers that they bought for $800… and is just pathetic for a vehicle that costs $90, 000.

Love it in person. It’s like an homage to the 80s, and what they thought cars of the future would be like in robocop, total recall, blade runner etc. welcome back to the hot hatch era! I love it

We’ve own an Ioniq 5 since February. It’s exterior styling wasn’t really that compelling a factor in our purchase decision. Mostly we like the interior comfort. The I5 efficiency is substantially better at 65 mph. Our overall efficiency after 5, 500 miles is 4.4 miles/kWh.

I love mine and cancelled my BMW order and very happy about it and after two Tesla's this is the best EV I've owned.

I never cared much about ionic 5 until I noticed one parked in front of a store. This one is not a small hatchback as it appears in videos, but definitely big small SUV stuff. Now when I learn more about the range and the fast charging and rightly priced I am more curious.

Was worried test driving this coming from a Tesla Model 3 - but it did not disappoint. Although if speed of TM3 is 10, this felt like a 9.1. And smoothness of the ride was 👌. I also test drove many other vehicles. This had the best and most lasting emotional response. Driving is a feel. And this has it in spades.

We love ours. Taken it on several 600 mile road trips from northern California to Southern California and haven't spent a dime on fuel.

It's pretty difficult to disagree with this decision...the Ioniq 5 is a pretty impressive vehicle. Was also named the "World Car of the Year - 2022" back in April. Hyundai / Kia / Genesis are putting out some IMPRESSIVE stuff now..

Thanks for the great review. I have my Ionic 5 pre-ordered for Q1 2023 . The new prices here in Western Europe are pretty expensive, the Premium Plus AWD is the cheapest version with the Vehicle-to-load adapters and that costs the equivalent of $62, 500 and that’s after the Green Energy Grant is deducted from the actual price. I ended up buying the “cheaper “ version at $58, 000 after the grant, that’s a lot more than I have ever paid for a similar sized ICE, but will also save about $6, 000 a year on fossil fuel and servicing. So total cost of ownership will be less after year four compared to my current Ford gas guzzler, plus I won’t be polluting the planet. Saving money and saving the planet sounds great to me and will compliment my existing solar panels.

all the ignorant snobs will still turn their noses up at it cuz "its a hyundai"
but at this point Kia/Hyndai/Genesis are giving even the german brands a run for their money.
They're eating everybody's lunch, and they deserve it!

The Ioniq is probably the most consumer base significant of all the EV options right now. Reasonably priced. Good (but not stupid) performance, and looks damn good. I hope it does well, because the other manufacturers need to figure out that there's a market for an EV that sits at the average ICE vehicle capability level that's reasonably priced. And they can actually look BETTER than their ICE counterparts and don't have to be one of those ugly, squatty wedge-box things...
