The Hyundai Ioniq 5 made a huge impact when it arrived in 2021 - wowing owners with its madcap design and ultra-fast charging capability. But even the most ardent of owners would admit that there was room for improvement. Charging speeds suffered in cold weather and efficiency was little more than average.

To address these and other issues, Hyundai has introduced a number of small but significant engineering updates to its 2023 version. The updates include a bigger battery for the long range model along with a new battery preconditioning feature that aims to improve charging speeds in colder conditions.

Join Mike as he takes a close look around one of the first new models to land in the UK. Have the changes addressed the early concerns? Should the Ioniq 5 still be at the sharp end of your wish list?

Looks good to me! I just wish Hyundai had decided to include a rear window wiper on the "refresh."

Just bought a ‘23 Limited in the states. I’m obsessed with it. With it as my first EV, I feel like there are no concessions made here and that Hyundai has really scored with it and it’s sibling variants. LOVE IT.

No mention of the upgraded suspension - IMO the most important aspect of this upgrade.

Really liked the Ioniq 5 and ordered one last year - but I got fed up of waiting, with a delivery estimate of around 8-9 months at best. I bought an MG instead - the Ioniq is a better car, but the MG was 25% cheaper and

The suspension has also been updated. It's much more stable on the road.

I test drove a few electric cars last year and this was by far my favourite. Good upgrades for 2023 but I'm waiting a little longer to see what comes out. In the meantime Hyundai, please add a rear wiper. On my test drive it's the one thing that really bugged me as I could see very little out back.

Well for me and hearing that news that the flagship model will cost almost £58K, puts it well outside my future range and to be fair I have been looking at Micro-cars to replace these big, overwhelming road congesting cars that everyone seems to be putting out, not that we need them as not all of us have school runs to complete twice a day. That is my two pence worth !!

Specs sound a lot like what we already have here in the US. It's readily available here in my part of Oregon, but dealerships are asking for a $7000 "market adjustment" on the high trim and unlike other EV's it doesn't qualify for the Federal tax rebate. EV 6's can be bought at a discount. The ID 4 qualifies for the federal rebate, so I can theoretically get at top spec ID4 for about $13, 000 less than the I5. I like the I5 better, but not that much better. I like the rear wiper on my current SUV, not convinced it's not necessary on the I5.

Shame they have gotten rid of the SE that’s what I have. May consider going premium smaller battery when my lease is up, but still lots to come out in the next 2 years

Still one of my favorite EVs out there, so definitely like the improvements they've offered with the 2023 model. Having said that, as cool as exterior cameras are, they all share one flaw - In inclement weather, specifically rain, they're useless. Once the camera lens has water on it, you cannot see ANYTHING on the screen. At least with a mirror, you can still see enough to drive safely. So, unless they're going to put tiny wipers on the wing mirrors to keep the lenses clear, they're not really an upgrade from the standard wing mirrors. Aside from that, I love the tech. Just doesn't feel like that bit has been particularly well thought out by the design team.

Tried one in 2021 - really good car but 2 things it me off. 1) Strangely shaped boot, very shallow due to the steep rake and more importantly 2) No rear wiper.

Come on Hyundai this ‘the aerodynamic shape washes rain away’ is absolute pants. The test drive car I tried had a dirty back windscreen and you could hardly see out the back.

Such a pity - ended up going for another EV but the rest of the car was lovely - massive interior and smooth quite ride.

I think the battery management improvement is the only update which counts...

18 month review guys. Beautiful car to drive and to look at. Very comfortable and classy cabin. However I would strongly advise to avoid at all costs. Mine already has had an ICC replacement and multiple electronic failures. It's been back to the dealer multiple times and has caused nothing but frustration and inconvenience. Tbh, I was surprised given all the awards and postive reviews. However, just take a look at the online forums and you'll see the litany of faults and problems with the Ioniq 5. In over 30 years of motoring I've never had such a poor experience with any vehicle. And I'm one of many, many people. Do yourself a favour and avoid at all costs.

I wonder if the quality of the paint has improved, it was really bad before, especially the matte paints

The original Ultimate didn’t have a heat pump and is unable to precharge the battery. There were a lot of missing options on the ultimate so don’t let the name fool you.

So if you live in Canada, you cannot get one of these in 2023, unless a) you are willing to pay way over MSRP, b) you had an order placed with Hyundai BEFORE January 2022, c) you have some connection with someone in a dealership or at Hyundai. For the normal everyday Joe, even if you put in a deposit to pre order one through Hyundai's system, we are SOL on getting the 2023 Ioniq 5. Heard through the grapevine, that even if you have a pre ordered Ioniq 5, dealer's who get new cars will sell them at a markup to someone else, keeping you in the pre ordered system, which is why this source is saying look to 2024. Tesla's are starting to look more attractive more and more.

I don't really get this. Prepare the battery for charging sounds like a good idea, but how do you prepare it? By heating it up using the electricity already in the battery. So now you can charge it quicker, but also needs to charge it more, because you have used more to heat the battery. So, what's the benefit?

Nice presentation

Impressive car. I considered it but chose a Volvo C40 which I’m really pleased with

Unfortunately I sold my Ionic5 Ultimate after just 3000 miles. Too many issues which was a shame as the car promised so much. First, my wife couldn’t stand the headrests, they can be moved forward but not back enough without changing your driving position. The windscreen was poorly manufactured. Sandwiched between the laminate was a lot of debris/dust. Which a low sun the refraction it generated was terrible. I thought I could live without a rear windscreen wiper, but in the UK it’s a must. My biggest problem was body panels around the doors and tailgate. Not flush, misaligned and some with large gaps, some with not enough. Lastly the raised parcel shelf in the boot rattled all the time on uneven roads. Couldn’t get it to stop and eventually removed. I liked the concept, just poor QC.

Is it me or is he really tall? He makes the Ioniq 5 look like a VW Polo
