But you missed the most important part about that city: it's irrigation which made it the most important place on the trade route through the desert. They collected water the few moments per year it rained in underground basins so they would never run out. Every trader depended on their water. No one dared to attack them, as they would have to siege a water rich city while being in the desert. Their water was their monopoly and their protection. Trade by sea became their downfall, as the desert route fell out of favor.

You forgot to mention that Petra adds +2 food, gold and +1 production to all desert tiles

As a person who's lived in Jordan most my life the coolest part of Petra is the irrigation system, so sophisticated for collecting rain water, also the tight entrance to make sure if enemies do arrive they would have to enter single file which would lead to an easy win picking them off one by one. Also Petra is HUGE can take you the whole day from beginning to end

If there's any belief that this could possibly be a coincidence, Herbert did an obscene amount of research for Dune. He absolutely knew all of this before writing the book.

Herbert's Dune was also inspired by Sabres of paradise by Lesley Blanch. It's about (a fragment in the history on) the caucasus resistance against the Russian occupation.

The Nabateans were trading insence. I'm sure they moved some spices as well, but it was primarily Frankincense and Myhr.

Oh no! You missed the most beautiful and architecturally important aspect of Petra... the brilliant way they handled WATER! The catch-basins, water networks, fountains, baths... More than the Fremen could have ever dreamed.

P.S. Thank you for everything you do. You're the best archi-tuber by far. So much gratitude and respect...

Fun fact: Exteriors for the climactic scene in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" were also filmed in and around Petra.

there are 4 major misinformations here. 1 The city of Petra was not mainly carved into the Stone. The free Standing strucktures just didnt survive. 2. The Nabateans are not a subgroup of the Beduins. the Nabateans are a far older group then the beduins, the Beduins only moved in in the 6th centure ad. 3. The nabateans where not nomads. They where Traders and major caravan runners but Petra was an agricultural society with advanced water management. 4. The main tradegoods passing trough Petra where not spices but incenses and pigments.

I read that author meant for the Fremen to represent Saudi Arabians with spice as metaphor for oil. Saudi Arabia has similar carved rock structures as the ones in Petra. The analysis is close but I think it is based more on the movie rather than the source material.

The architecture of the structures carved from rock for which Petra is most famous are from the period of Roman rule.

Fascinating history, Ms. Lee. Thank you!

Petra is a 5th/4th century BC city, yes, but the buildings carved in rock like El-Khazneh or Mada'in Saleh were 1st century BC and was inspired by Ptolemaic Egypt Hellenistic architecture, particularly Alexandria

Your presentation skills are absolutely contagious. In the period of a short - you've fully captured my attention and everything around me has fallen away. I hope your firm puts you in front of clients at every opportunity and pays you accordingly. You are a real 'rainmaker' in the capitalistic sense of the word.

The city of Petra is actually not there, it's nearby. What you see here is effectively the city cemetery, with ornate tombs cut into the hillsides.
